Careful not to answer any points now, TB, you wouldn't want to give the wrong impression about yourself.

China cracks down on protest news
China has been aggressively censoring international media in an attempt to lock down information about the violent demonstrations in Tibet's capital, Lhasa.
The anti-Chinese protests are an extremely sensitive issue for Beijing, which is desperate to avoid bad publicity only months before the Olympic Games.

Meanwhile...

Trial of Chinese activist begins
A prominent activist who publicised human rights abuses across China has gone on trial in the capital, Beijing.
Hu Jia, 34, is accused of "inciting subversion of state power and the socialist system".
The charges relate to interviews he gave to foreign media and political articles that he wrote for the internet, his lawyer Li Fangping said.
Mr Hu was detained late last year and then charged. His wife, also an activist, remains under house arrest.

in have your say on the BBC website about tibet............
Wonder why these protests worldwide happen simultaneously & Tibetan exile groups enjoy such good living in Dharamsara compared to the Indians around them? Simple,it is all 'cos of covert fundings. It's a western, extreme right-wing christian/Jewish plot. The BBC,CNN, other western media stoop so low as to doctor images just to smear China. Shame on you! China will emerge stronger & retaliate at appropriate time. You will see more Yankees dead in Iraq/Afghanistan/other places due to Chinese arms.

Negotiations on true autonomy, as the Dalai Lama has been beseeching for years.
Seems like the Chinese prefer to ruin their own Olympic party instead. I can't say that bothers me.
Er...to borrow a phrase from Tinytroll, why?
What is the advantage to Beijing in doing so?

No advantage. But I think the government have succeeded so well in transforming the country into a population of xenophobes angry at the outside world, that they find it impossible now to step back and take a more reasonable attitude to the Dalai Lama. It would be perceived as weakness. So they have little choice but to continue their propaganda against the Tibetans, and suffer the condemnation of the outside world as a result.

Yup. And give those Taiwanese a sharp kick up the arse if they think they can get away with it too.
Again, I feel you overestimtate Beijing's ability to care about the condemnation of the outside world.

No, not at all. I know they don't care. I'm saying they don't have the flexibility to avoid it, which is a shame -- if they did, we might see some chance of resolution.

Western tourists emerging from Tibet yesterday described their shock and fear as they watched a “howling” mob of Tibetans stoning and beating Chinese passers-by in two days of rioting in Lhasa last week.
They said that the crowd turned on anyone and anything that looked Chinese, knocking over motorcyclists, hitting them with metal rods and setting fire to their motorcycles.
Their testimony illustrated the ferocity of the riots, which have undermined not only China's claims to have brought peace and prosperity to Tibet but also the Dalai Lama's longstanding creed of non-violent resistance.

"I agree that the Tibetans have their own culture, but I can't agree with what people did. After a while, it was not about Tibetan freedom any more."........John Kenwood, Canadian tourist in Tibet.

Standard mob mentality; why is anyone surprised it turned out any different in Tibet? They're only human.
Or do tourists assume all Tibetans are bowl-clanging, mantra-chanting peaceniks wearing orange robes and sandals?

Well, it beats me why there are people who say this was a peaceful demonstration. It wasn't.

They were not demonstrating. They were committing crimes, like looting, arson, murder and criminal damage.

Funny innit. Those nasty colonials who have faced uprisings, demonstrations and people say good, people deserve their freedom from those nasty people who dared rule........
The nice Chinese Government who has supported and nurtured the backwards people of Tibet now face evil demonstrations, the Han who have all gone to live in Tibet to support the locals have also been targeted.........what a shame on those locals........... (and if you believe that BS version of events you'll believe anything.....)
Quite simply the Tibetans have been slaves in their own lands since Mao sent his army in, killing any resistance, destroying temples, forcing people to dance on their relatives graves, taking over religion and trying to install a huge Han population. These Han have the best jobs, and the back up from the government. Their whole way of life has literally been forced from them. And people wonder why they are rising up against the Han population and the government!
It seemed the world was divided into good and bad people. The good ones slept better... while the bad ones seemed to enjoy the waking hours more.

I'm still wondering why you haven't answered my counterpoint to that, which is that the demonstrations started off with monks proceeding peacefully from their monasteries, until they were beaten by plain-clothes police.
That kind of violence is evidently OK with you. It's amazing how amoral you are.
I don't need to go into the rape of Buddhist nuns, the torture of children, and other atrocities which have been a frequent feature of the 50-year Chinese occupation, because I have no doubt you are quite comfortable with those too.
