You have to change planes in Saigon, in the same way that you will have to change in Taipei with China Airlines. Personally, to ave several thousand dollars I would use a different travel agent.

VN doesn't fly to Brisbane - you'll end up chasing another flight from Sydney to Brisbane, adding 3-4h travel + another 1500$ per person

but smog's right, sounds like a posh travel agency.

Doesn't sound like a pleasant experience tho Smog!

quote:
I am an expat living in Hanoi where I have travelled extensively internationally and domestically on Vietnam Airlines for the last four years. I envy all on this forum who have had positive experiences on this airline as it is my experience that while the safety appears to be good, the service leaves a lot to be desired! From check-in to boarding to meals I have bad service time and time again. Surly and inattentive staff who prefer to spend their time the galley eating and talking and inedible food are commonplace on flights. There is inevitably a problem at check-in and customer service is non-existent even when flying business class. Toilets are often in a foul state shortly after takeoff and I have never observed these being cleaned or checked during flights. There is often no warning of delays or stopovers (ie when flying Hanoi to Melbourne or Sydney it is ticketed and marked as a direct flight - really it is a domestic flight to Saigon then everyone off and you have to carry your own bags through the customs area, wait a couple of hours and board a flight to Australia - similar situation for Hanoi - Phnom Penh where there is no warning that there is a 1hr stopover in Laos). The staff seem to have the attitude that passengers are lucky even to be on the plane and should not waste the staff's valuable time by making requests for blankets, pillows, water etc. While within Vietnam there is no option for domestic flights - I would strongly recommend anyone considering a long haul to Vietnam to choose another airline.

Geraldo - it is posh, it's Shenker - but they get better prices than my brothers un-posh travel agents (those thieves on the mezanine level of the plaza in DB - Apple Travel or something cheezy like that, isn't it)?

yes, but Hanoi is Hanoi and Saigon is Ho Chi Min City - 2 different worlds, 2h flight from each other
agreed on apple travel, tried a few times for a quote and always had to ask if it was for economy they were quoting

now if you gave the (approximate) dates of travel I'd fire a quick email off to my not so posh but basically very helpful agency

Ex-HK 2 May

Ex-BNE 9 or 10 May

Regarding China Airlines, I found this very helpful and I am SURE very unbiased article on their website:
quote:
In Feb. 2005 CAL successfully passed the rigorous IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA). In recent years, China Airlines has earned international recognition for its flight safety improvements, on-board service quality, maintenance capabilities, and technological advances.

and here we are:

QF direct flight
4800 adult, 3670 child, 2 may wait listed, 3 may available

with a stop
Singapore Airlines 3530 and 2650 for child
China Airlines 3750, 2850 child (no flight on May 2nd - so I'm told)

prices in HK dollar and without tax or fuel charge

That would be SQ all the way for me - stopover is 2h each way, and Changi airport >>>>>> Taipei Airport

It's hard hitting and across two legs. No, it's not Craig Bellamy's golf club, it's the champions league semi-finals
