Not sure if it is just me, but it seems the mad rush for using facebook dying off ?

I am glad as the amount of time that it took up during was getting silly.

If you have got any problems with this site send them to Support@HKExpats.com Thanks

Facebook was so 2007...

It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than open ones mouth and remove all doubt.

I don't use it because you have to put your real information there and that makes you vulnerable against cloning you credit card as bank database is not really difficult to get (see the news).
Database (Name of card holder + number of the card) + personal information (birth date + location + foto). See for yourself what you get.

In what sense do you have to put your real name in there? I have an account just for the purposes of looking around. I think it's in the name of John Smith or Fred Bloggs or something. No real information in there at all.

Damn, I just remembered I listed my mother's maiden name there too, and all my previous addresses... why did I do that?

geraldo,

Just on a technical point, when companies ask you to enter the billing address for a credit card it's all a sham. Accroding to our people who deal with the credit card companies, none of them has any means of authenticating that for cards based in any country except the USA. You can put any address you want on there in most cases for cards absed in other countries. If the number and the CVV2 (the security code) are valid and not on the "stop list" then in most cases the order will be processed.

The volume of credit card fraud is huge - that's why the interest rates (and merchant fees) have to be so high.

'pends no? - the local plonkers use the miserable verified by visa authentication, if the merchant doesn't support that they might give you a call (as they do now & then to me)

if you have to give billing address is mostly an offline transaction by the merchant

not that I really care - I do check my statements when they come in

Yes - verified by Visa adds a level of authentication. But not all local cards do it: HSBC does (on its Mastercard at least) but Citibank doesn't.

And, sure, if it involves physical shipping then it's a different matter, but for online purchases of stuff not involving shipping (say phone services or software downloads) then it's pretty easy to do.

We track IP addresses and all sorts, and have had people trying to defraud us (for telecoms services) apparently from an internet cafe in Cairo, for example! (Although of course they may just have been proxying through there.)

Ditto. I use it to find people (ok one person whose number I'd lost but I knew was a Facebook fan). Fake name, free email account, zero personal info ... just like here.

It is almost impossible to exaggerate the complete unimportance of almost everything.
