One such case is that of Chan Yiu- kwan, a single mother in her fifties, who bought a 1,200-square-foot North Point flat for more than HK$1 million in 1999 and turned it into two separate flats for lease.

HK$1 million for a 1,200 square foot flat? Sounds a little cheap.

1999 - sounds like a million years ago

It's hard hitting and across two legs. No, it's not Craig Bellamy's golf club, it's the champions league semi-finals

Still it sounds unreasonalbly cheap for the size.

Looking at her maybe she paid the remainder with a little throat action.

ok, but
quote:
Wong has failed to pay any rent since December 2003
The single mother said the tenant once told her: "For 20 years I did not have to pay rent."
She added: "And he told me he will move out if I gave him HK$150,000 as settlement."

that does not sound right, his tenancy contract would have expired by now, and she has been sitting aside for 5 years? There must be a little more there somewhere

FYI, a quick google on property trends came up with
quote:
Annual declines were:

* 1998 – 32% price decline
* 1999 – 8.5% price decline
* 2000 – 14.5% price decline
* 2001 – 10% price decline
* 2002 - 13% price decline

it also doesn't say which area of north point, so it might have been an old dump instead of a brand new luxury flat

as said, there must be more going on - never in any way would I have a chance to stay in a place for 4 years+ without paying rent

I read that this morning.. but also what is real weird for 700sq ft the rent was about 3.5K .. I mean do we get skin taxed that much or was his rent real cheap ??

I don't pay much more than that for one of my places.

But also, look at the date, he signed his lease during SARS.
