Greetings,

I'm getting a transfer from UK to HK through work and will be there in JUly.

Am I mad? Is the price of living massively more expensive in HK copared to UK?

That is much too general a question, it all depends on what you expect to get for your buck (or Pound Sterling as the case may be).

Housing is massively expensive in Hong Kong, true, but if you're transferring in from London, you may not be quite as shocked/outraged compared to say Slough or Nottingham (just to name a few). Just like in any major world business city, you can live quite reasonably if you're willing to accept longer travel times in the morning. Significant savings in rent can be made if you live on Lamma or Lantau and take a ferry in to work in the morning for example.

Items that have a significant effect on living costs include, but not limited to:
- How many people in your family
- Space/facilities required
- Office location
- Acceptable travel time
- Any kids that require international schooling?
- etc...

Answer the above questions for yourself to get a better idea of what you need. Also, this issue has been discussed here a number of times. A search on "Housing" and the like should provide you with some further insight.

Last but not least; Living in Hong Kong is quite an experience that most of us here would highly recommend (for a while at least), so housing/living costs should not really be only deciding factor...

Thanks for these various answers ...

I'm definitely coming to HK as I have a child there (long story)!! I applied for an international transfer through the company I work for and have been told it's happenning in 3 months time - scarey but great.

I should probably think about learning Cantonese too! Oh, out of interest, who is Britney!?

Does the massively more expensive accommodation make up in any way for the less tax or will it all be about the same in the end?!!

Oh, and I'm told HK's not a bad place to be if you're single ....

Dont bother learning cantonese - not needed at al.

rental is expensive but as u say taxes are lower. without figures it's difficult to advise the net net change for you.

ignore Bintney - 'it' is not important.

HK is a great place if you are single, married or anything...especially this weekend.

The world would be quite pathetic if everyone had that kind of attitude. Seriously sad on your part.

Ok, Cantonese is not essential but has its huge advantages if you do learn it. If you do learn to converse in Cantonese then your % of pulling increases leaps and bounds cuz you can have a go at the locals too.

It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than open ones mouth and remove all doubt.

Since HK Bloke is, I believe, married, this may not be a priority for him...

(And I think the DB wife-swapping all happens in English.)

Not with our Britters, she's game if you are white and have a pulse.

Actually, a pulse may NOT be required.
