Have you considered the Tahitian International School? It's popular because uniform costs are lower, you know, grass skirts and all that.

Why waste time on International Schools when you can get your spoiled brats into a local school for free???

They also teach Chinese at local schools, and that would be one of the main reasons you chose the CIS???

Yes, I think that's the team chant for their cheerleading classes.

Paenca, I'm a little surprised by your complaints, where do you come from (as in where are you at the moment)? Problems with schools entrance are the same the world over not only in HK. Just on Friday I was having a similar conversation with one of the partners in my firm (in London) where she was telling me she was considering moving house because the secondary schools in her current area were terrible. So I said why not go private and she replied that even with a lot of money there was little chance her girls would get in because places are now so incredibly competitive (she was saying around 10 to 20 applications per place). However she will make the application and pay the fee because there is still a chance her daughter will get in.

It's like that all over Britain (and the same problem is now starting in France where people are actually buying or renting a flat or purely cheating so that their kids can attend a good school).

Like everywhere parents (local or expats) want the best for their kids and competition is now fierce from a very young age.

I don't think the application process is unethical as I'm quite sure that out of the hundreds applications that were made a few kids got in. This is what you pay for, a chance for your kids to get in.

Anyway it does make things a lot easier if your job helps you find a school place.

Good luck with it.

Of all recent posts yours is the only that appears to come from one with some intellect and therefore worthy of a response, although it seems I am as ignorant of the world you are used to as you are of mine, at least when it comes to the local schooling situation. The places we have lived (different countries/continents/hemispheres), good and top rated local English schools are abundant and many of which require no or low tuition. Our houses are nice large detached single family homes on a big lot, with swimming pool in the backyard and direct views of park/greenery from inside the rooms, yet it is within short walking distance to shops and schools. A couple of the smaller schools may have waitlists, but they are quite short and the schools will not take any fees until you are ready to register to attend.

Yes we have had it really good, relocating to Hong Kong will be a big sacrifice in some ways but obviously there are reasons for our move. Have never lived in Europe, it seems the problem with good education there is the same as in HK, too many people and not enough space. If this is the way of life in these overcrowded places, so be it. If we turn out to like it in Hong Kong that is fine, if not, it will just be that much more to look forward to when we eventually return home.

CIS' application process may seem alright to you as you are used to this sort of practice, whereas I was not. At any rate a good decent school would have asked me for my story and understand why I felt I was ripped off, but they never even bothered. Their acceptance priority is given by date of application, a practice strongly favours the locals and results in large part of the student body (think the ratio I read was 97%) being ethnic Chinese, most of which local Hong Kongers. In the end it is probably a blessing in disguise as I would much prefer our children attend a school where there is more of an even mix of different racial/cultural backgrounds (similar to where they have attended schools).

My original post title is also intended to alert foreign (perhaps not so much for British and French now) expat parents of this practice at CIS so they can be better equipped than we were and use their application fees more wisely elsewhere.

Schools aim to pile on tuition fees

Timothy Chui
Tuesday, May 13, 2008

Five leading international schools want to increase tuition fees by 3.2 to 9.9 percent for the next academic year.

According to the Education Bureau, Hong Kong International School, Singapore International School, the Australian International School, the Chinese International School and Yiu Chung International School have applied to increase tuition fees, and at least three more will follow suit.

A spokeswoman for Yiu Chung said the fee hikes would offset inflation and a recent increase in teacher salaries.

The chairman of the Federation of Parent Teacher Associations of Hong Kong Eastern District, Yan Chi-hung, said parents are already being squeezed by rising costs for books and other school-related expenses.

"Although parents of students in international schools generally have more spending power, the burden of the hikes is unbalancing their checkbooks," said Yan, noting that students in subsidized schools may apply for relief on fees.

Students at the Chinese International School face the biggest hike. Annual tuition fees that range from HK$82,400 to HK$130,700 now would rise to 9.9 percent to HK$90,520-HK$143,570.

Hong Kong International School expects to raise fees by an average 3.3 percent, rising from HK$62,700- HK$145,100 annually now to HK$64,700-HK$150,000.

Singapore International School wants to raise its charges from HK$62,700-HK$92,000 now to HK$69,500-HK$96,000.

The Australian International School plans to increase tuition fees from the current HK$57,900-HK$100,700 to HK$60,800-HK$105,700.

Yiu Chung International School wants a fixed rate of HK$134,962 for primary and HK$112,000 for secondary from the current range of HK$57,900- HK$128,535.

I feel sorry for the Paenca's treatment by the CIS. It is unethical to charge someone who would have no chance to get in for the forseeable future. Just a common sense for that.
As for your 2 kids aged 5 & 8, they would be easily mixed with the local kids with different kinds of schools run by different bodies. It does not have to be international school. My son's school is one of reputable Chinese school in Kowloon side. They have mixed race children going there and are very happy. Children are very adaptable and versatile!
Try the local school and see how they get on. Being in different parts of the world and learning different cultures and languages shold boarden their minds and view. Good luck!
