Employment in HK [ New Topic]

Dear all,

I did a bit of a search and oddly enough couldn't locate any previous threads with terms employment / jobs so please accept my apologies in advance if such discussion is refrained upon for any reason.

My situation:

I live in Sydney with my wife and 1 & 1/2 children (2nd due in May). Im keen to seek employment and relocation to HK.

Why: I spent most of my early childhood growing up in HK (Ages 3 -> 12) and miss the lifestyle, the people, the experience. From a professional perspective I'm keen to re-globalise my career with a global operator.

Ive tried accessing HK employment opportunities through various employment portals (monster etc) with little progress. Ive also contacted any business colleagues but theres nothing much there right now. I guess my next turn is employment agencies, but I wanted to get some advice first (which ones etc).

Im in Telecoms here - linkedin profile - http://www.linkedin.com/in/matthewjones

I would appreciate any advice and or direction you might have to offer.

Faithfully

Matt

yes I have.

Its not the most usable site :), and i cant seem to filter senior GM/Exec roles - mostly sales clerk etc

Was hoping for some recommendations.

One aspect thats a little challenging is the constant requirement for fluent Mandarin (which i don't have).

Thanks ill continue the daily review of Jobs DB

maybe you could try Telstra in Oz?
They own CSL here and might be interested in farming you out to HK?

A key question is whether you have the right to work in HK or will you need an Employment Visa? It's much harder to get a job if you need a Visa. Since you lived here for more than 7 years you might be able to get Right to Land status which would give you the right to work.

And do you speak any Cantonese? That would help too.

At the sort of level you are at I think you'll need networking to find a job - I don't think things like Monster or JobsDB have the sorts of senior roles that you are after. The SCMP classifieds sometimes do: http://www.classifiedpost.com

Obvious places for networking are Telstra International (they have a growing presence here - sponsored last weekend's HK Sevens), CSL, Reach, PCCW, PCCW Global. You might also consider the equipment vendors who have significant presence here (Alcatel-Lucent, NSN, Huawei even), although most of them seem to be going through hard times at the moment so unlikely to be recruiting.

Yes as I understand it thats one of the biggest challenges..

Im not sure that I do have the right, Ill need to investigate this a little more.

One thing I omitted is that my Dad (AUS Citizen) and my step mum (HK/Chinese Citizen) live in HK (have done for 20 years).

Could I use my Father and or Step mothers citizenship to any advantage?

Cheers

Once you are out of full-time education your parents' status makes no difference to yours.

Since you were here when you were 12 you should have had a HKID card. If you still have it (or a record of the number) that might help with Immigration. I would send them an email ( enquiry@immd.gov.hk ) and explain that you were ordinarily resident for a period of 9 (?) years in the 80s and hence you have appeared to have acquired the Right of Abode then. If you have visited HK at least once every 3 years since that time then you may still have that right, but if you haven't then it seems to me that you should have the Right to Land, which is the same for all practical purposes (except you can't vote).

well thats good advice. ill track down the exact time i was there and see what both my parents have to say about an ID card.

if Im not able to secure any privilege then the only other scenario is to work for a multinational that could employee me out of another country perhaps? - UK?

Any other options?

Thanks

Where your contract is based is of no importance - if you don't have RoA or RTL and you want to be physically resident in Hong Kong then you need a visa, and if you are physically employed in Hong Kong (regardless of where the company is that you sign a contract with) then you need an Employment Visa.

Yes sorry thats what I meant by "working for a multinational" - where they secure me a working visa, much like my previous experience working in Singapore & the Philippines when working for a consulting company.

I thought HK was closed to ALL applicants for employment from Convict Island???

And with Xpat Aussie's relocation (forced repatriation), the process of shipping them out once and for all had begun???

Someone, maybe Juno the Local font of knowledge guru, pls confirm this....

Apologies in advance for my poor sentence structure, but a retard is at the keyboard!

For example this is the kind of role - problem always seems to be the Mandarin requirement (which is understandable) - http://www.jobsdb.com/HK/EN/Job.asp?R=JDB163517994&13059

landog, visa application is relatively easy and painless in HK. My compnay has relocated staff & family to different countries, and have placed overseas staff with other companies to their HK office. I'm not in Telecom so i don't know what your chances are here. i'll wait till you reach 10 posts and send you my company's contact.

Er, DBI - it's only the sender of the PM who has to have 10 posts, not the recipient.
