Extremely dusty home environment...how to fix? [ New Topic]

Does anyone else have a really dusty home environment? Everything in my apartment gets covered in a film of dust the size of 5mm bits EVERY DAY. I don't have a maid, but even if I did, she would have to go over every surface twice a day to ensure the dust is removed.

Is there an air purifier that anyone can recommend that they have experienced that really is good at DUST removal/larger particles? I am not interested to 'clean' the air of micro-pollution, but rather just get RID OF THE DUST!!!

I really would appreciate any recommendation as I am going to have to bring up a baby in this place (as my husband doesn't want to move), whereas I am really concerned that the milk bottles, baby play toys, sleeping area, and baby crawling on its hands will collect all the dust which will be popped straight in to the mouth. Thanks all!!

Is there a construction site nearby?

Don't know where you are but I assume it's in town. I think I would insist on moving somewhere cleaner to bring up a baby.

when i lived on waterloo road i had the same problem, so we restricted opening the windows to two times per day for airing. the rest the day they stayed closed, and we had 1 air cleaner in the liviung and 1 in the bedroom, this made an amazing difference, hardly ever dusted after that

I use a dustbuster, and it has made all the difference

Oh thank you everybody for your suggestions.

KT, may I ask what brand of air cleaner did you buy? Mr Bear has agreed to buy an air purifier or two, but I was hoping for some suggestions as to a good brand/models. Are they noisy to leave on?

Yes, I have asked hubby to move but he is use to the snowflakes. I prefer my food and sleeping quarters without.

Try also adding screens to your windows, it will stop alot of the dust and allow the air to still pass through.

The above comments are personal and meant for comedic purposes only and in no way reflect the thoughts, ideas or other general lunacy of HKExpats Limited.

Thanks so much for this thread, life saver it is!

Been having a real bad nose allergy which in turn has turned into sinusitis, non stop, ever since I opened all the windows and switched off the aircon!

Now I know why!! Experimented since yesterday and definitely I have stopped sneezing as much! Keeping all the windows in my bedroom closed. Will be looking into air purifier.

Thanks God Thanks for starting the thread chinabear

I dream again

adding 3 air purifiers which are made with oil products in china area, add to only more pollution........the circle.....

but then again if the govt doesnt do anything we have to do something ourselves, at least make our home somehow pollution bearable

Sorry to say this KT, but 'the circle' theory to me has one big HOLE in its theory, especially when I think about 'green' alternative products on offer.

Until every green product starts giving me a 'lifecycle' analysis of the harm its existence creates compared to a normal alternative product, I am going to go for my life.

Sadly, most 'green' offerings are just marketing gimmicks when you look into it. Eg. How does using 'green' washing liquid compare to normal dish washing liquid goes? It's only a marginal difference at best because both have a factory, both have a marketing team and a company that has guzzillions of workers running a round using up finite resources. The marginal environmental savings are completely eradicated.....hence the hole in the circle theory.

...Guilt free 24hr available air purifiers come to mama....................ahhhhhh. And thanku for your suggestions about the windows too, I will put that in to practise as well.

Does anyone else see the irony in having Leonardo di Caprio and his entourage jet setting in to HK to promote the green credit card? HSBSC asking every environ'MENTAL' do-gooder concerned follower to sign up and SPEND BIG on their card?

Reverse the greenhse effect! Tax everyone at 98%. No more discretionary income = no more spending/materialism = no more pollution/factories in China....now that is the 'circle' theory working.

Al Gore.....I hope my Noble prize is on its way and the million dollar cheque that goes with it. At least it will stop you from spending another million on your electricty guzzling home. (Once again cirle theory with BIG HOLE in it).

Try the rainbow vaccuum cleaner. Not cheap. But effective.

Let me get out the measuring tape......and grab a random sample. Slightly off, 4mm on average not 5.

Thanks Gimpmask, but where can I get such a vaccuum from? The brand name doesn't ring a bell?

They have a distributor in Hong Kong. I don't have their information at hand though.

I've been worrying about this since cleaning my computer fans the other day. Seems HEPA filter types are the best choice (ionizing varieties produce ozone which is bad news apparently). Google has not been as useful as I'd like though so I'll have to check out some stores.

So has anyone spotted a range HEPA types? They only had the ionizing sort at my nearest store. Haven't ventured far yet.
