In my case, that would be from Toronto where I am at the moment, but I like to apply for a bank a/c in HK while I am here, so I can transfer funds to be ready when I arrive HK.
Any suggestion, advice, bank preferances etc , if feasible.
Many thanks .

By the way, I am a HK citizen, plus UK and Canadian. I am sorry I sounded ignorant, and indeed I am kind of dumb with money matter ( along with other matters, must admit )... much appreciated your inputs.

HSBC p**s me off with their charges and crap service - they only like you if you keep lots of money in their bank. I've found them pretty unhelpful whether in HK or UK. Bank of China has been fine but She Who Must Be Obeyed has a shed of money with them so that may explain things. BEA have been very helpful and no complaints so far. In the UK I use Lloyds TSB who are another bunch of arse when it comes to service. In my experience the better service comes from the smaller banks.
Average by Intention.

I feel stupid that I did not line things up last time I was in HK.

Lily, I think you will need a HK address to open an account. They usually ask for something like a phone bill to prove you live there.

Say if I live in a rental place and I don't need to pay bills just rent ( as it's all inclusive ). Would that be alright to produce a letter addressed to my name for prove of living there. And what if I live in service apartment ?
Nonetheless, if things are getting complicated, I have to do without a bank a/c in HK. Man.......
any other possibilities please...

If you have HKID and you can supply a utility bill of some kind that will normally suffice, tl. If it's an all inclusive rented property then the official invoice from your landlord should be ok too.
I use HSBC and BOC but find the customer service of BOC streaks ahead of HSBC.
