Has anyone been there and can suggest a hotel to stay at. Also, How are the beaches there?

the beaches in and around Hua Hin are not good..... all pebbles and stones.... some sand but rough as fook..... the sea is crap ...all cloudy and no good for off the shore snorkelling.... it's the wrong side of the gulf of Thailand... so the tide is very strong and not good for kids as the undercurrent can pull you/them out...
pluses are that you can take the family there (to Hua Hin) it's not as in your face as other Thai destinations.... can't comment on hotels as I stayed in a small B&B when I was there....

I was looking at the Evason. But I'm confused as the travel agent says the price given is for an evason room but when I go to their website it looks like they are only villas with private pools. How is the beach at evason?

They have villa's with private pools and also normal rooms. There is not much of a beach but the pool, service, spa are great. Two thumbs up!

Isn't Hua Hin where the King of Thailand has his summer palace (on the beach front)? I would guess this makes it a pretty 'safe' area to be...
to be, or not to be, what was the question?

Hua Hin is great, the beach is crap, but the resorts are lovely ( evason) and there is a fantastic night market and food area, if you walk away from the resorts. If you want to sunbathe next to Z- list UK celebs, I would also suggest Chiva Som , its a lovely spa. I sunbathed next to Cilla and Dale for 3 days in a row.

No pics. It was enough seeing them by the pool everyday, believe me. Actually they were very low key, though I detected no colour change WHATSOEVER in Dales tan.
