I really don't care much about the 'lympics. I think mostly it's crap - a few good sports - running, throwing - the one with spears and swimming - I can see the point of trying to find out who is fastest but they have world championships as well....so which one matters? It used to be about amateurs but now it isn't. It was about the Free World Versus Communists - well it seemed that way - and now it's about a bunch of steroid freaks competing to see who will get found out sometime in the future. As a spectacle the over choreographed load of twaddle of the opening and closing ceremonies which are usually proof that Circus Soleil is globally accepted as entertainment are sold out fastest; that's like having school sports day and the parents going off to watch the drama teacher put on a lycra suit and pretend to be a tree. s**t.
In an attempt to show how all encompassing the 'lympics is to humanity we have the 'Special' Olympics after the main Olympics - yes you can be a retarded cripple but not during our games lesson - f**k off until next Thursday when its off-peak.
Charming.

Now the 'lympics is in Beijing and all and sundry are coming out to say that Beijing should have chit-chat and cakes with the Dali Lama. Apparently China has some Human Rights issues and the lympics are a good time for rent a mob and the associated UN hypocrite squad to roll up and bemoan China's record on treating it's citizens an' stuff.

quote:
Double gold medallist James Cracknell has told Sky News that China's human rights record should have prevented it from ever being given the Olympic Games.

Spot on mate.

Everyone knew what China was like when they granted it the 'lympics. But the IOC and all the merchandising and the media and the soft drink, credit card, banking corporations thought 'f**king Big Market - Loads O' Money' and lo Beijing got the 'lympics. No questions asked. Or maybe having the 'lympics would encourage China to be as responsible a nation as such fine and upstanding nations as UK, France, USA etc.

If the 'lympics is a big deal & it stands for sports(man / woman / cripple)ship and stuff then as a venue it should only be given to countries that are shining lights of liberty and freedom and not to those that aren't. If you don't want to be a part of democracy and fair play (and TV rights) you can f**k off until you are....but not next Thursday cos that's when the cripples are booked in.

they should hold it on the isle of lesbos, and the only event should be gap-lapping, and only pretty female athletes allowed

So should London still be allowed to hold it in 2012 given the UK's human rights record in Iraq since the start of the fake war

90,000 deaths and counting....

Not realy no - not if Human Rights is considered a factor in choosing where to hold the 'lympics. And if it isn't a factor stop implying it is a factor and admit that it is primarily about money, market share and politics.

not sure what that has to do about money, market share and politics.

Exactly. It's a load of b*****ks. It's just a vehicle for product promotion and jingoistic nonesense. If it wasn't for some one dehydrating on the marathon and hobbling into the stadium it wouldn't have any examples of the determination of the human spirit either.

Oh come on - have you EVER watched synchronized swimming!! Human spirit personified.

And yes of coourse i agree - but it's no different to all the other big sporting events - which is why the next world cup is being held in South Africa - one of the world's great footballing nations.

The World Cup is a more watched sporting event about which more people care. What's more, there's a genuine fan culture once there which brings folk together. The Olympics comes down to raw nationalism as very few of the sports are anything anybody gives a shiite about.

I'm not quite sure how South Africa fits in to your argument. FIFA are often shiite, but one thing they have done is develop their sport into a genuine world sport. NOT giving a World Cup to Africa, given the passion, knowledge and love for the game there, would have been shameful. It's hardly a commercial opportunity. Even FIFA's big commercial move (Korea/Japan) was a wonderful event.

And the Dutch, German, Italian, Turkish.....etc

There are football hooligans but they aren't the majority of footballs supporters.
