Any reason not to change from PCCW to this new service?

I loathe PCCW and their underhand slimy sales tactics with their dishonest slimy boss.

will it cause any problem with yer broadband TV/net connection from PCCW?

I'm glad I don't see PCCW sales teams, pouncing like Mormon missionaries on unsuspecting punters in DB Plaza anymore -

to be, or not to be, what was the question?

Are you talking about their HomePhonePlus, if so, I have seen these and am intending to get one.

They look like they will do the job quite well and you dont need a fixed line anymore.

The only thing I can see though is that you cannot attach a fax to the system, but you can have up to four handsets like a DECT phone.

If you have got any problems with this site send them to Support@HKExpats.com Thanks

I'm still trying to get my head round this service.

You lose the capability to fax.
You commit to something brand new for an extended period.
The price seems the same.
What do you gain (apart from someone different to whinge about as your supplier)?

Have a look at their IDD rates. 4.90 per minute to Belgium, 15.00 to Madagascar, 20.00 to Tokelau. Could someone please call them and explain voip?

it's addictive to browse a SmartOne website

Well the IDD purchase is, presumably, a separate decision as always - I assume there's no requirement to use their IDD if you have their line? One good thing for users of some IDD services (such as IDT1529) is that I suspect (although this is not an official IDT statement) that 1529 calls from such a line would be charged at the "mobile originating" rate rather than the fixed originating one, which can be a little cheaper for personal customers to some destinations (e.g. 38c/min to Belgium rather than 58c).

And on fax, unfortunately, Smartone's valid assertion notwithstanding, there are various organisations in various countries in the world who I deal with and who still occasionally require fax communication.

I learned it's better to take an expensive IDD.
I told the boss the new IDD (such as IDT1529) was considerably cheaper, she didn't need any more inspiration and my bill rocketed through the roof. It's like we have a direct line to half of Indonesia 24/7

Indeed I know that problem. I, in the form of Mrs smog, am one of IDT1529's biggest residential customers! At least calls to Indonesia are tending to get cheaper with competition having some effect there. The Philippines telecoms industry cartel is still very solid so call charges to there haven't moved at all for years.
