Disneyland Blamed For Serving Shark's Fins [ New Topic]

Disney - which claims to be environmentally friendly - is "making a mistake of the highest order'' in serving shark fin soup to high-paying guests at wedding banquets, warned leading environmentalist Brian Darvell.

The comments of the Hong Kong University professor were echoed by green groups who claim the theme park will be contributing to an environmental disaster.

In a letter to Disney chief executive Michael Eisner made available to The Standard, Darvell, a former chairman of the Hong Kong Marine Conservation Society and a member of the South China Diving Club, said, "I think this is a mistake of the highest order. No matter that such soup is perceived as prestigious by some consumers, from whom you simply wish to make money, shame on you.''

What do you think folks? Should Disney cave in or stand firm?

I love Shark's fin soup, the real one.
Not PC perhaps *sigh* but one of the most traditional Chinese dishes and this is China. I just checked.

I do not think they should be serving this. I do agree that it is China and it is a traditional part of Chinese cooking, but its just not required. There are plenty of other things that could be served in it place.

Maybe they should start a shark breeding program over there to supply their own kitchens. Then see how many people go when they see the sharks thrown back into the tank with their fins cut off to die.

If you have got any problems with this site send them to Support@HKExpats.com Thanks

Yeah, but is it right to target Disneyland only when all the other major 5-star hotels and restaurants serve the dish at their wedding banquets?

Is Disney a target simply 'cos it produced "Finding Nemo"? [:D]

Anyway, I promise not to have shark's fin soup at Disney!
Am a bit allergic towards amusement parks.

I am so sick of the "it's cultural" to excuse cruelty and endanger populations of animals that belong to the whole world, not just one country. It is "cultural" to milk Moon Bear's gall bladders for medicine, to club baby seals in the Arctic, to hunt whales by the Japanese. It is just not good enough. These are global times - no excuses about lack of information any more. It is downright cruel and totally unnecessary. Yeah Disney should be targetted, because they do know better and they pretend to be good global citizens. But so should the other restaurants.

Disney is a place for kids and should set an example as a family and education friendly place that does not always put commercial interests first. However, Disney must be thinking of all the lost mainlanders' biz if they don't serve that. They are the main clients, not westerners.

The greens should send letters to all 5-star hotels, for good measure.

Now if Ocean Park did that, it would be really bad PR.

Why don't we ban the use of shark fin products in Hong Kong? To be fair and consistent, isn't this what we should be doing instead of just targetting Disney? (I have no connection whatsoever with Disney, by the way)

I don't think that Disney is going to lose mainland business if it doesn't serve up Shark's fin soup. It will however, lose my business.

As a multinational company that purports to educate as it entertains, it has an obligation to educate all peoples about socially acceptable behaviours. Sharks fin soup is no longer acceptable as it is resulting in endangered shark species. Serve all the beef you like - I am not worried about endangered cows - there are plenty of them.

Yes, right on. Shark fin soup is banned by environmental laws in a lot of countries, I wonder if China (and therefore HK) is going to clean up this particular matter in time for the Olympics?

Of course not. Did Seoul ban the eating of dogs when they staged the World Cup?

Yep - they did "officially" but of course they didn't in reality. But China's govt has a heavier whip hand.

So the news read in Oz. But then again - some countries are very very good at false and misleading 'advertising'. Not that I point the finger - given my own govt's tendency in that direction.

I'd like to try dog meat. Too bad it's illegal in Hong Kong and in most western countries.

If you go to Bali you see "restaurants" that are carefully marked as dog servers. Why anyone would eat a carnivore, I have no idea - if you look at food chains, the top of chain are the scavengers ie, primarily eaters of carnivores. You lose 10% percent of energy each step: sun to plants, plants to herbivores, herbivores to carnivores, carnivores to scavengers. 10% of 10% of 10% of 10% = so little that you wonder why anyone bothers. Scavengers are important in cleaning up the carnivores and converting them to waste. But would a human voluntarily place themselves in that role?

It takes time for people to understand the cruelty. My dad, even after watching the documentary about the sharks fin industry, admitted to me that it is a cruel trade but added 'If we don't eat them, they will eat us.'. Well Disney should indeed set an example by not serving it at all.

Speaking of dog meat... I find it disgusting that many restaurants here have it on the menu. Turns me off.. Hehee GT, you remind me of my science teacher in Secondary School :D

Rach - that's coz I am your science teacher's evil twin. Doomed to roam the world, spreading news about the energy triangle and the consequences of being a scavenger. [}:)][:u][:x)][}:)]

Nope tinybear, we don't serve dog meat in Singapore... I am in Shanghai now and was talking about the restaurants here.

GT, my science teacher was one of my favourite teacher!
