Aren’t you sick of it yet? The Olympics we mean of course. The ebullience mixed with the venality of the sponsors; the endless piousness of the million and one op-eds (to which we admit to contributing); the fake smiles plastered on the faces of the advertising, marketing and PR hype masters; the empty platitudes; the cod philosophising; the politicians jumping on the bandwagon; the whining on all sides... we are thoroughly bored with the whole four-ringed circus personally.

Here’s a thought! Let’s scrap the Olympics. Not boycott, or protest, or pontificate but just dump it in the bin of history before, like an old drunk that doesn’t know when it’s time to leave the party, it embarrasses itself terminally. And no life support – just an end to it – final – terminated with prejudice. And not just the summer games but the winter ones too and the disabled ones while we’re at it. The Olympics are not, and have not really ever been, where the world comes together as one as the ad men would have you believe – if any sporting event is that horrific concept, then it’s the football World Cup now. The Olympics remains home largely to a motley collection of marginal and minority sports. End the expense, the upheaval, the wasted money and time on all that advertising and selling and slit the throat of the whole nonsense.

And while we’re at it, let’s clear one thing up for good – the Olympics are political; they’ve always been political and always will be. And anyone who says they’re not is just plain wrong. In fact, it’s time for a history lesson, because when you hear the Olympic Committee and the Beijing organisers appeal to people not to politicise the Games they talk as if their hands were clean:

Melbourne 1956 – the PRC pulled out because the Republic of China (Taiwan) was allowed to compete under the name Formosa;

Montreal 1976 – Taiwan withdrew after Canada informed them that they could not compete under the name ‘Republic of China’;

Moscow 1980 – The PRC was one of the 62 Countries and regions that took part in the US-led boycott of the 1980 Olympic Games, protesting the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan;

So no more “don’t politicise the Olympics” please. Oh how we long for the wonderful days of September to come around.

I really can't stand it - I'm sick to death of the Olympic countdown, the Olympic minute, the Olympic Heroes the f**king Olympic flame. The whole f**king issue is a waste of time and money and is a contradiction of the Olympic Ideals which are pimped out to any country and sponsor.

At the very least the Olympics should have no athletes competing under any flag other than the Olympic one. There should be no medals tables. The 'Special' Olympics and the proper one with the steroids an' stuff should be combined. No athelete that plays a sport for money should be eligible to compete.

I can't wait.

You used to speak the truth.
But now you're clever.
