When someone has a baby why do they tell you how much it weighs but not how long it is?

Actually you'd need the girth of the baby as well to create a mental image of if it was the correct size or not. Plus a limb and digit count.
And eyes / ears etc.
After that you can pretty much count on it being OK 'till it grows up n stuff.

You might have all that at the start, but it is how many digits you have at the end that counts. Some end a few digits short.

A return to the 'good old days' are in order where after conception was confirmed the men (plural?) would retire to the local pub to get p**sed and play darts, crib and skittles until the pregnancy was complete and the baby successfully delivered.

I personally find men just get in the way through the whole process. All these book reading, sympathetic phantom pregnancy blokes are really just puffs. What we need is a fetch and carry person who won't open their mouths unless to agree when we complain. Thats it. Its p**s easy.

Reply: To give a sympathetic male puff answer, weight, length (and head circumference) are extremely important at birth, as critical for pediatrician to monitor growth over baby over first few week, months and year. If baby is not growing properly, according to set charts / statistics, usually can mean birth defects of some sort, that aren't immediately evident from their physical appearance.
