'Fewer opportunities to fight mainland abuses'
2008-04-29 HKT 11:13

The US-based Human Rights Watch says mainland citizens now have fewer opportunities to fight abuses of power, because of the increased restrictions on lawyers representing them. In a report, Human Rights Watch said lawyers in China are facing increasing harrassment and intimidation, the blocking of access to witnesses and case evidence, and even physical assault. The report cited the example of a group of lawyers who offered to defend Tibetans involved in the riots that rocked Lhasa last month. The lawyers were warned by the Justice Ministry that doing so would jeopardise the renewal of their licences. Human Rights Watch urged Beijing to give the legal profession more independence, ensure lawyers are protected while carrying-out their work, and allow the UN special rapporteur on torture to visit China.

sad thing is this is now happening in hong kong as recently as yesterday..........

`Pillar of Shame' sculptor claims SAR barred entry

Diana Lee

Monday, April 28, 2008

A Danish sculptor said yesterday Hong Kong's international image as a place that respects the freedom of expression has been damaged following the refusal of immigration authorities to allow him and his two sons into the city.
The three were stopped at Hong Kong International Airport when they arrived on Saturday and expelled after a six-hour interrogation during which they claimed they were denied access to lawyers.
