Are these illegal yet ? I have lost track of where we are in the HK Govt's 'roll out schedule' for all this stuff.

No - and there is no intention to make live telemarketing calls illegal - I don't see how you could possibly frame a law that would do so.

What is now illegal is for anyone to send unsolicited SMS, fax or pre-recorded voice messages to any numbers which are registered on the corresponding Do Not Call register (there's one for each of fax, SMS & pre-recorded voice).

OK tks - so i have noticed a sudden rise in the number if live tele-marketing calls i am, getting on my mobile. Obviously you can play the 'Wei Wei Wei' game for the first few times but then even that gets boring. Can you get these blocked.

The last few had caller ID enabled so i can see the numbers. Love it when you call back and as soon as they realise you cannot speak cantonese they roll out the std 'sorry i dialed the wrong number' even though i called them.

I'd noticed the same. My theory is that the marketing companies are treating the "do not call" registers as a very good source of validated live phone numbers.

OFTA is already onto a version of unsolicited calling which is to call you quickly and hang up before you answer so that you see a missed call and call them back. OFTA has confirmed that this is covered by the UEMO: http://www.ofta.gov.hk/en/press_rel/2008/Apr_2008_r1.html

I normally hit the "pound key" about 10 times, and then hang up.

It:
- tricks dialling computers into thinking that your number is not a voice number, and flags you for deletion off the list.
- p**ses off the live telemarketeers, who give up after a number of tries.
- gives me tremendous satisfaction

All kidding aside, it does actually work. I get almost no unsolicited calls these days, live or otherwise.
The only ones that keep trying are the trainees being broken in at De Bore & partners etc, who will call anybody, including people supposedly scratched off the list 6 months earlier...

I have had a few recently, when I answer in Ingerishhi they always ask if I can say can I speak Cantopop, I say yes, they start blabbering and then I quite rudely tell them I haven't understood a single word they said in Cantopop back...

Usually they get frustrated at that and say bye

I find a polite 'F**k off' ends the call quickly and with the minimum of hassle.

'There's no hugging or kissing - unless you cough up the breakfast voucher.'
'That's a bit mercenary'.
'It's not a bad buffet though'
'Which one?'

It's particularly annoying when overseas and you get charged roaming rates for receiving them.

it all became much bett6ter for me since i took a diff point of view on my mobile:

1 my colleagues know my office number, so they dont need to call me mobile
2 my friends know my office and home number which are tyhe 2 locatioons i spend most time
3 disconnect mobile phone for 2 months to assist in educating everybody
4 after this never ever answer any call anymore thats not listed in your phonebook

the result is i am now on a package of HK$ 38 a month and happy as pie that i dont get disturbed every 5 seconds by just about everybody for nothing :) and it works perfect

I normally tell them in a very clear, slow voice, that I do not want to join their Al Qaeda terrorist network. Then hang-up.
