Pro-democracy activists were forced to abandon their own torch relay, after they were surrounded by angry spectators in Tsimshatsui. Members of the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China had planned to run along Salisbury, Nathan and Austin roads, to call for human rights on the mainland. But hundreds of people surrounded them - shouting abuse. Police formed a human chain around the group, and escorted them to Kowloon Park.

"For her own protection". Not sure of the legal standing of that.

This is a dangerous time for Hong Kong. The HK government is obliged to ensure enthusiasm for this "sacred Olympic torch" (a strange concept for an officially atheist country like China) but by doing so -- especially by barring peaceful protesters from entering the city -- it is damaging the fabric of our pluralistic and open society.

my son's school asked the kids to all wear red today in support of the Olympicsbulls**ttorchrelayhoorahfortheMotherland crap.
i put him in his usual uniform and told the vice principal i didn't have an orange shirt he could wear in defiance, a little taken back she said ok...
unfortunately it's easy to wrap kids up in patriotism without them understanding what is really going on

Remember, BB, we mustn't mix politics with sport!
That's why venal pro-Beijing politician Tsang Hin-chi is one of the torch bearers, then...

My son's school asked all the kids to wear red T-shirts in support of China and the olympic spirit. My son went to with a red T-shirt with 'England' written across the front.
That made my day.

Just noticed that the Calvin klein ad on the side of the Ritz-Carlton featuring a 4-storey lunchbox has been tastefully covered up for todays press fest.

I agree with this..
But whatever...I got frisked terribly everywhere, from every side while standing in the queue to cross Natahan road today morning on my way to office.
I wasn't kissing him, I was just telling his lips a secret!!!

I agree with this..
It's a shame Beijing doesn't agree with it. Otherwise, we wouldn't have a torch relay made up mostly of politicians and businessmen. And the angry youths would be flying the Olympic flag instead of the Chinese one. The Olympics is a very political event.

Yes it is. According to scmp.com
quote: In other developments, a student at the University of Hong Kong Christina Chan Hau-man, staged a pro-Tibetan rally. She covered herself with a Tibet’s national flag outside the Muslim mosque in Tsim Sha Tsui.
Ms Chan and fellow activists were stopped by the police and forced into a police van.
She was allegedly attacked by a man in the crowd as scuffles broke out between the activists and the patriotic crowd along the route in Tsim Sha Tsui.
Police said the activists were taken to the Yau Ma Tei police station to “prevent any further disruption to the public order”.

Beijing were given the olympics as part of politics ....it was obvious that it could be shanghaied by Beijing to suit their own agenda but it was a choice by the Olympic committee to take the chance and maybe some good would come from bringing china in from the cold ( so as to speak),,,,at the end of the day if china isn’t mature enough to use the opportunity given to them appropriately then they( Beijing ) have achieved nothing

So no right to peaceful protest enshrined in the Basic Law after all then. w***ers.
