I am just a bus aunty who is tired of individuals always painting things in a negative or sinister light that is not always justified.
If I sound like an apologist sometimes, it is because of the topic matter that the critiscism is normally related to.
Once, you could rely on televison news/newspaper for facts/stories that had been well researched, called investigative journalism.
These days, if it appears in print or as a news story on tv, the bulk of the people are too busy to think more deeply and accept the blurry stories that are fed to them. There is no checking of facts now a days because of the 24hr news mentality of the world - just get something out there we have the AM and PM edition of everything.
It use to be a case of 'the Danish sculptor was denied entry by HK immigration because (we have proof/source material/a letter or an immigration officer on tape who confirmed this, we have the tape in our locked cabinets) that supports he was denied entry at the request of the Chinese government'.
Now it is a case of, (we really have no idea if this is true or not but let's just print it anyway) he was denied entry and it must be for some funny reason. Let's not put in the same story that Tibet monks were allowed entry on the same day, Mia Farrow, Geilo and Ms Chan of the Free Tibet movement were allowed entry/a mouth piece in HK.
That is why, I rile and sound apologist at times. Most of the s**te that gets written up doesn't do anything about educating anyone. Just creates blurry, spurious divisions about the country of China (represented officailly by the CCP's administration).

Interesting that when students at a Beijing university were shown pictures about the Tiananmen Square demonstrations none were able to identify what the pictures were about ...but then it’s not something that is taught in china as it gets in the way of the Japanese invasion in the 1930's

Yeah, just as interesting when media outlets use footage of other countries' authorities bashing tibet protesters and label it as China.....
Puyi, what you are talking about proves that a bunch of students couldn't tell you about a picture of a bunch of students.

My wife knew nothing about Tianamen Square - zero - apart from the 'fact' that troublesome, rioting thugs were trying to attack the government and other Chinese. She was shocked when she started to find out the truth. I used to know a journalist who was in Beijing at the time who described the horror of what she called The Beijing Massacre - with the army shooting Beijing citizens and running them over etc as the citizens tried to stop the army from getting to the students...
But of course - that never happened and tanks did not drive over people and only foreign devils trying to cause trouble say such things....

...and I've not forgiven Madeleine Albright from changing it from the Tianamen Square Massacre to the Tianamen Incident so as not to offend an important trading partner...

The same media that probably only showed the crying mothers of the Tiannemen students going they killed my baby, but edited out the image of the mother going why the f did they go an protest for? Or why they f after they finsihed their protest and made their point why didn't my kid just go home?
Or the same media that did not bother showing the several peaceful attempts of the authorities to tell the students you have made your point, go home. Please go home. There are rumblings that something will happen, please go home.
...And yes, before you ask, I believe the Tiannemen crackdown was absolutely atrocious way of handling things by the CCP.

Puyi, if they wrote it on books in schools you would call that....what? Propaganda? A scare campaign to silence the masses to never challenge the authorities again or this will happen to you?
Damned if you do, damned if you don't hey? China bashing....Come up with something that will help the people. Not just try to turn everything about them in to a suspicious thing.

I'm not bashing China. There you go again - any criticism of the faults of the government and you call it 'China Bashing'.

I regard 'China bashing' as turning anything and everything regarding China in to a negative position of FACT.
eg. This is the tile of the other thread, 'China in Hong Kong: Who were the people denying protesters their right to be heard in TST?'
We are ALL educated enough to know there is plenty wrong in China. And you can grumble all you want about it or bleet to the world about your particular experiences in China.
But there is a huge difference between pointing out something purely as a POV, and putting things down as fact and proven. Eg. over incidents which one doesn't have first hand experience of we have Juno's title above. Some of the negative media stories are purely speculation = populast China bashing.

You can regard something as a fact all you want but it doesn't make it true.

Man, if you guys knew what proportion of a government's departmental budgets are wasted on dealing with sensationalised media rather than tackling the core purposes of the department's creation, you would shoot half of the media and totally curb half of their powers.
How often the western media got stories and their facts wrong because they couldn't get to the facts, or by deadline, and had to print just anything by publication time....
And then the machinations of government twisting and turning to get a story out the way they want it or not out at all......PR spin or something more sinister, cover up someting or educational....man, the system is laughable on both sides. But the western media is there only to SELL ADVERTISING. Never forget that. It's never been about educating the masses or reporting facts, especially this day and age. SERVE THE MASTER, ADVERTISING, PRODUCT SALES!!

"Educating the masses"? Like propaganda? Brainwashing? Like when Hitler "educated the masses" about the Jewish threat in WW2? Or like when the intellectuals were sent for "re-education" during the Cultural Revolution in China in the mid 60s to 70s?

I think the local newspprs are very good example of free mass media....very good quality of journalism. but you wanted free press right? Where a story on the latest handbag style or shade of metallic powder or nude shots of Gillian or Paris Hilton sells more....And now that the Iraq invasion is old news.....let's give it a quarter page report out of 60pg printout.
That's what I call educating the masses.

They teach you of the concept of and imortance of free western style media in school.
And to try to think of both sides of few for analysis.
But what is western mass media all about?....Selling advertising. They don't educate you on facts now a days, or present unbias both sides of a story.....

Well at least the Chinese media in HK have hooker reviews. Party officials in China have to spend endless hours in karaokes researching for themselves. Just think how much more efficient the country would be if China Daily carried such information.
