in some countries there is a procedure called pro charge whereby the police do not have to arrest the person whom they have witnessed doing the assault but can take the name address and ask them to appear before a court at a later date....canada britain australia have these powers......

I saw both incidents on the news coverage. As mentioned, they both could have asked the police to pursue the incidents. If the police then went on and intimidated or threatened the protesters against pressing charges, then that is a matter of great concern.

However, what we are seeing is probably police prioritising the imminent situation at hand. Ie. highly emotional people on one side. Another party wanting to make a very public statement. Let both get one with what they want as long as no one feels heavily aggrieved/upset. Otherwise further action could be taken.

For the HK police to demonstrate their non-bias, doesn't mean they have to arrest people left right and centre. OFTEN it is about trying to avoid action that inflames a situation/getting out of hand. Clearly BOTH incidents were exactly that, and not some issue of bias. And at the end of they day, once again, I repeat, the individuals could have stopped and said I want to report an incident.

Some pictures this morning courtesy of MBD/Puyi/Sun Gai Gwailo: http://www.daylife.com/search/photos/all/1?q=Christina%20Chan

I'm afraid the cynic in me is coming out a bit now...

Is Christina Chan actually Chinese? She certainly doesn't sound it when she speaks English, and I've never heard her speak Chinese.

Why is she hanging out with a scruffy, rent-a-mob gwailo?

I have a growing suspicion that a bunch of people from something like the Free Tibet Campaign had a little discussion, possibly over a joint after their monthly shower, and realised that what they really needed in Hong Kong was some pretty young Chinese-looking person to be their puppet. And somehow they managed to find one.

I admire her spunk. Nice to see a Hong Kong kid with a bit of fire in her belly.

Is she actually a "HK kid" though? All we know is that her preferred language seems to be English, spoken with a very proper accent, and that she studies at HKU. If she were really a Hong Kong local would she talk to the local police in English?

If she was clever enough to know speaking English on TV will give her a wider audience....

Anyways - what's wrong about having a clear voice and a decent education....

Anarchist governments eh?

'Rent a crowd' Free Tibet professional protesters accuses 'Rent a crowd' CCP, sheep/puppet HK'ers.

Man, if my marketing campaign had a 30% hit rate, that would be counted as amazing in any business language. But no, those who volenteered to wear a sticker wer seen as 'puppets' forced/rented by the Chinese government. Talk about China bashing and being so subjective that one can never be able to say a nice word about China.

Talk about painting a negative picture on things....Dutch man and two sons get denied entry to HK = HK suppressing freedom of speech! HK Government now does CCP's bidding. HK is doomed, CCP is now so powerful!!!

......Funny, on the same day some Tibetan monks got let in, Mia Farrows gets to do her 15secs, this gweilo gets his 10sec of fame, Ms look at me Chan gets her two seconds plus a bit more than she bargained for, Martin Lee gets to bleet on before retirement, and so forth.

The dutchman was denied entry, IMO, most likely because of a secuirty issue, not because of any other reason. Of course, the media has to be go one about there is something suspicious going on, because it sells more papers and is much more interesting newsprint. You have a guy naturally p**sed off, he has just spent US$3,000 getting his arse over here only to be denied entry. His plans for the week gone; protesting, sightseeing, drinking, catching up with mates, showing his sons the GREAT country of HK. So he goes to embassy as a last ditch effort to see if anything can be done about it. That it. Nothing else. End of story. Why the need for the papers to fill in the blanks with something more sinister linking HK immigration department with CCP?

Nothing at all wrong with a bit of posh totty. And I realise that making her point in English is better for worldwide attention. But I was referring to the "I don't want to get in the van" remarks addressed under stress to the police. She did that in English as well, which surprises me if she is a local.

Which Dutchman are you talking about?
Are you referring to the Danish sculptor if the "Pillar of shame" per chance?

Of course, both Denmark and Holland were once occupied by the Germans, so it's much the same really. You're all Deutschers, no? What say you bus aunty?

Well, there is a bit of a question mark over the questioning of my bleeting, but I always will referentially go by the person who is from that area than any map, book or facts of history.

No skin off my nose.....
