...I rilly have no idea of the geog-political history of that area...and it is not a point of major concern in this thread so I wasn't about to dispute it if Adfundum and you are saying otherwise.

I recalled the article incorrectly and quoted the man as a Dutchman when he was described in the article as a Danish sculptor. This incorrect recall is the only thing I am apologising for.

It becomes a major point of concern when you can't get your basic facts right.
It reflects negatively on the credibility of the rest of your statements...

You chose the handle yourself (as well as the other ones you use on this site).
As far as your credibility is concerned, I think you are your own worst enemy...

Nah, under Giant's aforementioned assimilation theory, all our local neighbours here are Japanese...

I have a growing suspicion that a bunch of people from something like the Free Tibet Campaign had a little discussion, possibly over a joint after their monthly shower, and realised that what they really needed in Hong Kong was some pretty young Chinese-looking person to be their puppet. And somehow they managed to find one.

That's an amazing inference to make, and is clouded by prejudice.

Indeed - I would very much like to be proved wrong on this one, but it fits what I've seen so far (as do many other scenarios I accept).

Yeah - I'm struggling to follow why this is an issue even if they did chose her as a 'leader'.....

It also implies that any attractive, intelligent and well presented person isn't able to voice dissent - remarkable.

You used to speak the truth.
But now you're clever.

It's an issue because my perception of the coverage has been that it implied strongly that she was somehow different from the putative protesters turned away at immigration in that she was a truly dissenting Hong Kong voice. And I would very much like it to be so.

But the evidence I have seen so far suggests that she is actually a foreigner (albeit of Chinese descent), or at least very largely foreign-educated. Moreover she seems to consort with foreigners more than locals. These two, if true, would detract strongly from her credentials to be a genuine Hong Kong voice of dissent.

And of course I'm not saying that attractive, well-presented, intelligent people aren't able to voice dissent. What I am saying is that if your organisation wanted a front person to be a figurehead for dissent in Hong Kong who would get as much media space as possible then someone very like Christina Chan is exactly who you would pick.

Whether the above is true or not, Ms Chan is just an individual voicing her protest or she may be part of the Tibet Youth Congress. However, what the Tibet Spiritual leader has said is, as a respected leader of Tibet, he has always stated that "Tibet is part of China".

A quote from a western newsppr on the topic of Tibet meetings......"China has repeatedly accused the Dalai Lama of wanting independence for his homeland, accusations rejected by the 1989 Nobel Peace Prize winner who has often stated that Tibet is a part of China".

So the question becomes, what government is funding the Free Tibet movement and why?
