Someone who's originally from England but has spent more than 2/3 of his life in HK, who is he? A Brit or HKer?
Someone born to English parents in HK, grew up here and except for university never left HK, who is he? A Brit or HKer?

british and HKer refer to nationality, not to where one grew up, was born etc, so look into your passport and you know what you are.

I've had an American passport for 20 years yet I feel strange calling myself an American. Is this a touchy issue for you guys?

Just because you were born in a stable doesn't make you a horse (unless you are a horse, of course) nor does it make you Jesus

I never question 'who am I'.

So how do you categorise people who have 2 or 3 different passports 2H2H?

erh passport is passport, i was clearly referring to nationality before, so if one has the british natioonality then i'd say he/she is british, not? i dont care she was born in timbuktu and raised on the moon.

having a passport means nothing i think, aas one can have a passport from one country but be a national in another?

Well, I sure know what to call you: a man who behaves like a 14-year-old and believes acting like an ass makes him cool.

Nationality isn't what I am referring to obviously. Plenty of men call themselves American/Britons who don't speak the lanugage or know anything about the culture and I am not sure how many of you will agree with their idenity. For those who are locally born and raised and yet call themselves otherwise - such as American - I can assue you when they do go over to the "mother land", they won't be regarded as a fellow country man. What I don't get is: what's so great about calling yourself anything other than what you really are.

I've been called an inverse banana before: white on the outside, yellow on the inside.
Does that count?

The passport defines nationality. There are many people around with two fo three nationalities. They could be born in one country and have two different (equal) other nationalities.

Passports and nationality tell you nothing much about a person (my daughter is Canadian, but has never set foot in the country). The culture they were brought up in (which can be totally unrelated to their nationality) tells you much more.

smog lets do it like this, in court being asked "what are you"? do you answer im american but as i grew up in a thai family with strict thai rules and values, however living in France , i prefer to call myself thai.

i am pretty sure the court would just state your american, maybe i am wrong.

anyhow its going to far for me if people are sooooooooo confused as to who they are.......mg....good luck
