Hmm...

Sorry Lolo, but that article is mixing up sums donated and not spent, and sums pledged but not delivered, as though they are one and the same. In fact, it just looks like lazy journalism to me and as a result I can have no confidence in any of its figures.

I guess I turned off on these huge $$$ drives around about 1986-7 when it was obvious that the vast amounts of cash raised by Live Aid were still earning interest in banks due to whatever reason

Can't comment on the stats in that link I posted, G-man, but still makes the point, I think.

Well as an ex-journo type person you can surely recognise that the writer is mixing up his numbers. As soon as that happens any point he's trying to make is lost.

However, the 'Long Live China' b*****ks really got up my nose. Why turn a human tragedy into a nationalist rally? Imagine if crowds in London were in the streets chanting 'Eng-ger-lund!' after (say) the July bombings. Just wouldn't be right.
I don't see what's wrong with that, although the Chinese didn't say 'Long Live China', more like 'be strong China' and 'China' here includes the victims and those who's helping out there, unlike any sort of worship. It might be just a different way of expressing ourselves compared to youse English?

I don't understand why people are having problems with using 'unity' via nationalistic sentiments for a good purpose/outcome.
Are we all that sad on this forum?
When would it be a good time to use such sentiments?
Or are these sentiments to be boxed away and never to be expressed?
Chih-sin. I think everyone on this board is starting to sound like grumpy old whinging f%rts.

Peace.

I think I have been most inspired by the story of Chen Jian who was trapped under the rubble for days. He was found but rescuers were not able to free him since the roads were blocked and heavy lifting machines could not be brought in. Whilst rescuers were helpless, he motivated himself and others around him with encouraging words and the thought of his wife whom he recently married. Alas, the machinery arrived and he was freed after being trapped for over 100 hours. Unfortunately, he died whilst he was being carried away from the site.
But his display of courage in adversity is something that should be admired.
