And yet, the Chinese govt turns away rescue parties who fly in from UK and Canada because they haven't got visas (Sunday Post, 18/5).

How ironic and how tragic that the two biggest natural disasters of the last month have both taken place in countries where the govts are making it close to impossible for foreign aid/workers to enter.

Yes LT, Lola. So much I don't understand...but I hope that the dollars we contribute make it someway or somehow to those who really need it.

Well it makes me feel slightly better when I give to a charity.. I only hope my cash gets through

LT your right tho... shoddy contractors and building engineers should be feeling the heat in these past few days... it's a disgrace

I personally think Hu Jintao and Wen Jiabao have done a great job in keeping the rescuers motivated. Notwithstanding any ulterior motives (the orympics!), they have really led from the front.

A really sad story from the news last night. A PLA rescuer had to choose between his duty or abadoning his post to rescue his own family. He chose to fulfil his duty and his family perished. He could do or say nothing when confronted by his cousin. So sad......

Then there is the looting, and fighting over the air drops....aiyaa....

I'm with LT on this - China isn't short of cash; I really don't see how that helps.

I'm very sympathetic but I'm not sure if I donate $5 or $50K how it's going to help - how much of those dollars anyway will get to the people on the ground?
China has plenty cash - it has the worlds biggest armed forces (effectively the worlds biggest sapper (engineer squad)), helicopters, civil and military air force - it's been able to organize an Olympics, a crack down in Tibet, an Olympic torch run, a restriction on issuing visas to business people, a censoring of foreign media, a shutting of factories that may pollute prior to the Olympics - I don't think they need cash.

What value in cash expresses that I'm sympathetic and feeling empathy with the unfortunates that have lost so much?

Will they investigate Chinese building standards and enforcement?

Totally agree with that...

I refuse to donate a cent, on similar grounds to the above.

China doesn't need money!!! It needs to learn how to organise the millions of troops/sappers/medics it has just waiting for Taiwan to attack into a cohesive force and airlift them in to start helping in Sichuan.

Then it needs to reassess why places like Kobe/Osaka/Tokyo/Taipei don't turn into piles of rubble* when even bigger quakes hit them on a more frequent basis... ah yes, it's because the buildings are built properly and not by the cheapest bidder who has no idea about foundations and metal frameworks...

*Yes, I know there are deaths in those places, but nothing on the scale of what's happened in Sichuan where buildings have collapsed because they were made for peanuts

This has just come from our HR Dept....

"In response to government's announcement, all staff are invited to stand in silence for three minutes from 2.28pm on 19 May 2008 (this afternoon) to mourn the Sichuan quake victims. Thank you very much indeed for your kindness and cooperation."

Luckily I will be in/on the way to my weekly sesh with nurses in Lai King, so I can avoid this charade/soap opera.

And for those who do stand up for 3 minutes, how does that help anyone???

It's same as a min silence when you remember the dead in war on remembrance day.. it's a time to think & reflect .. a time to pay your respects

not heartless... just a realist!!!

I choose how and when to show empathy/sympathy and I don't need the government's empty gestures to dictate how I should do either...

You don't get memos from a HR dept telling you to attend a Remembrance Sunday parade or to go put a Poppy on the cenotaph.

We're developing a culture of empty displays ('acts') of grief which do f**k all but enable us to say 'I did my bit; now can I get back to watching Corrie?' ,

I'm a realist too but think your taking it a tad out of context.. It's not like the govt is brainwashing you into converting to the god squad or anything.. they are simply setting a time aside for people to reflect... you can choose a diferent time no probs

Setting time aside for when I can grieve?
It's none of their f**king business - they can concentrate their energies on things that should be their f**king business like building codes and enforcement, controlling pollution and avoiding corruption, cartels and cronyism. My f**king feelings are not their f**king business. I can think for myself, I can grieve when I want for what I want and I don't need a Nanny state controlling when I choose to take a pooh or when or who I cry for.

why do I need to reflect??? it's not like this event was 60 years ago, like the end of the war...

it's still going on with blanket TV coverage, and will continue to go on until measures are taken to sort out the utter mess the province is in.

now, let's talk about the f**king shambles which is Myanmar, noone is asking us to stand for 3 minutes to reflect on that clusterf**k are they???

no, because there's no political points to win with Beijing

Pretty gob-smacked by some of the responses here.....just give some $$$ to one of the Charities and respect the 3-mins silence, it really isn't much to ask of each of us with this Disaster......clearly anyone can come up with dozens of reasons why not to, but why choose to look at such reasons, very odd - in my view, World Vision / Red Cross / Oxfam type charities WILL use any donated money effectively.

Realize Myanmar is also seeking donations, equally valid to give to both in my mind....although the frustration of aid not getting through in Myanmar or aid going directly to the Junta, I find very disturbing.

Whatever...

Well I will have a thought at 2.28 for the dead... They do this sort of thing in UK offices too so don't know why your so het up about it and think it's some subliminal brainwashing message from Beijing

We did the same on 7/7 and 9/11 in the UK and probably for Diana and probably for the IRA bombings over time.. nothing to do with points scoring from there

I thought the point of the observed silences in these instances, was to show solidarity with the surviviors, make them feel les alone etc etc

I am sure those people who have lost everything and now are living in that mess are going to feel a little bit better, and less alone, knowing that a few thousand people stood up for 3 minutes in Hong Kong.

I don't think so...
