No, Hk is not squeaky clean. But it is a whole lot cleaner than it used to be.
And it is a whole lot cleaner than the rest of Asia.

Of course, the collusion between government and powerful interest groups are a whole different cup of tea.

How would the employment of the retired commissioner of police by a big property group be viewed in countries like
the USA, Canada or Germany ???
Li Kwan Ha was employed by Li Ka Shing.
Mr. Tsang -Donald's brother- got a job with Sino.

How would property cartels, or a banking cartel, be viewed in the USA or the EU ?

But how about buying a buyer lunch or dinner ?

In HK it is common for buyers (especially lowly employees) to ask for 'entertainment' before the payment is settled ?

How about the end of year demand for 'lucky draw prizes' ? If you are a supplier you get those emails just before Xmas and CNY. "Please supply some prize for our annual staff dinner".

In answer to the above three questions respectively:

1. Yes it's OK, along as business is discussed and value and venue are appropriate (i.e. you don't have dinner in Club Venus for example)
2. If HK buyers do this they deserve to be penalised. This is unacceptable practice.
3. Not illegal, but I hate this as it distorts the commercial relationship. You negotiate a finely balanced deal, then someone demands freebies on top, albeit that they go to the company for a staff party. Just not done old bean, and something will be expected back later or you lose some integrity.
