whats the big deal paying and extra 400 bucks?? if someone thinks that $400 increase on the basic salary for a "helper" who clean your s**t and in some cases your whole family and extended family s**t (during visit or...) then you shouldn't have a helper. Hong Kong is one of the unique places in the world where an average (IMOP) citizen can afford to hire someone to do all the s**t work for them. I'm all for the increase.... I fully support it. my 2 cents.

There is no minimum wage for local domestic helpers under the laws of Hong Kong.

As for foreign domestic helpers, you should pay them no less than the prevailing Minimum Allowable Wage at the time of signing the contract and factor in the living costs of your foreign domestic helper. The Minimum Allowable Wage has been adjusted to HK$3,480 per month with effect from 6 June 2007.

Again, as usual, I found it ridiculous that there's no minimum wages for local but foreign domestic helpers. The difference is a local DH gets as low as $40/hr, a say Filipina gets $60/hr if they do part time. Local DH have to pay for their own acommodation and food whilst foreign helpers get provided all these things by the employers.

It is certainly strongly rumoured (the local Filipino press was reporting such this week) but as far as I know it's still just a rumour. Expect it to happen though.

yes it must be very hard for those local people who work as dh and have no language problems and are surrounded by their own culture and have family support at hand etc etc etc and cant be fired for trivial reasons or subjected to degrading antics by the employer or forced to share the sidewalks on sundays with all the other dh's ................hmmmm times are tough

Yup, it's far to difficult for LEGCO to put in place minimum wage legislation that covers everybody - god forbid that it might actually have a detrimental effect on their big business cronies.

Foreign helpers choose to leave their home to work overseas. And they could have a nice future if they spent wisely with the money they make here, or, their family could already have a better life back home.
Local people, lots of them get paid about the same as the foreign DH (under 4K a month), they have no choice to work elsewhere and their future is nothing as nice until our wonderful government do something about it one day.

Did you see that news item last night of some death trap hovel in Sham s**tole Po - 3 govt departments approached about the various fire hazards, sewage issues etc and not one doing jack about it....I don't expect a lot from HK' govt and they certainly never exceed my expectations.

Yes I did and it didn't surprise me. I lived in worse place when I was a kid and I feel their pain.
There are a lot of places 100 times worse condition than that s**thole and my helpers' room is like a palace compared to them.

Lots of governments are w***ers and we have one of the worst here.

Erm, pretty much anyone can be fired for trivial reasons in HK with very little comeback.

So if the rumor becomes a fact, there won't be levy anymore?

Shazza has a point there. The gap of cost of living between these two countries is so wide that's just unfair to compare workers. Is anyone suggesting that locals don't work as hard as Philipinos? The cleaning ladies at my gym are locals and I can assure you they work their ass off.

Went to Makumba last night with a friend and it was dead as usual. There were two guys playing on stage who I guess sort of work for the club now, does anyone know what the pay range is for guys like them in HK?

trying to follow the logic of this argument, let's see

Group A get paid s**t, but were born/live here
Group B get paid s**t, but are migrant workers

Group B would earn less than Group A if they stayed at home, so should feel themselves better off to be allowed to work here and earning more than Group A

Option A: Society is to blame
Option B: Government is to blame
Option C: People should know their place
Option D: Group A should get a Filipana passport and apply as ODH
