Even more so if you take into account the difference in tax rates.

Errrr I would beg to differ most people posting on this board would have had state education and none of us have done too badly

It's just some of the inner city schools are s**te but I still belive the state system in the UK can give a decent education if the parents are also playing an active role in supporting and educating
Don't agree. State education in the UK now is a (VERY) pale impersonation to that you could get 20-30 years ago.

I do not believe it is easy to get a good free education these days.

I think it depends very much where you are in the UK. In London I would have to agree with HKBloke, it's impossible to get good education if you don't pay, however the north is doing a lot better and there are excellent free states school in Lancashire and Yorkshire for example.

HK private schools are not too bad if you compare to private schools in the UK but it's still quite steep...

Interested to know how all the brits are so anti their free education system back home ...how do you determine that the schools are so bad ? the schools maybe reflecting the society itself and very misguided education policies determined by people who don’t come from a teaching background........... the state education system in oz is good only the politicians like to grandstand at election time with headline statements about education

It's not like that.

The state school system is free and it used to be fairly 'equal' though there were obviously problem areas with some inner city schools in very deprived areas that had issues with violence and such and struggled to attract good teachers.

Latterly the Tory Bliar Labour Party has put in loads of bench marking and testing & introduced 'League Table' systems of measurement for schools. The nett result of this has been that certain schools have done very well and can attract the best teachers, the best funding and it's got to the point where parents will move house to be in the 'catchment' area for a certain High school or even a Primary Feeder School for a certain High School. Thus - those that can afford it can now get the 'best' free education.

But the league tables are misleading - 'good schools' might only focus on getting children to pass certain exams that count towards the league table position (and the tests can start from when kids are only 5 or 6) or they may not enter children for exams that might not pass so the % pass rate for a school is made to look very high. Nett result - some children are at a very early age being chucked on the scrapheap as they don't have the necessary 'skills' to get a school a good point score to get onto the league table.

Well - so says me mam who was a school teacher all her working life, degree in child psychology etc who retired early because she got fed up of having to spend more time filling in forms and completing audits rather than teaching th' kids.

So in effect the term bad schools is based upon a politicians assessment and not based upon making all schools equal.........in effect the UK system is based upon an accounting system rather than education

The education system should be about equality of knowledge that empowers all the students to be able to make sound decisions in their later lives and be able to contribute to the next generation.....however the straterfied sytem that appears to be in effect occuring in the uk just continues a hierachial society and a welfare class who are denied the equality of education

Exactamundo puyi. That's why I'm not best pleased with it as it is not the system of free and equal education I believe in.

You think joining the expat community in Hong Kong solves that?

No - but becoming an expat back in '95 had no f**king connection to the direction or my involvement in the UK education system other than I'm one very clever bloke. And now I'm in HK with kids at school here that's of greater interest to me.

Right - I'm asking how you're going to provide a free and equal for your children in this place.

I can't and I can't do f**k all about it. I have no option but to pay for education as my kids two languages ate Mandarin and English and I don't think the added pressure of learning Cantonese well enough to be taught in it is a wise move for them. My decisions about my life shouldn't be a hurdle for my kids.
