The University of HK's Council resolved to rename its Medical Faculty after philanthropist Li Ka Shing after an unprecedented donation from Mr. Li in the amount of HK$ 1 billion. The move has sparked great controversy, however. Past graduates of the Faculty oppose the move as insensitive to the feelings of graduates and as encouraging the culture of 'money talks'.

What do you think? Do you think there's anything wrong with the Council's decision? Or do you think that nothing's wrong with it and Mr. Li deserves such recognition?

The Prince of Wales Hospital in Shatin has had the LKS Specialist Centre for years, and no-one seems to mind about that. Perhaps it's just people jumping on the current anti-commercial fashion.

Why shouldn't he get the recognition if he's prepared to stump up the dough.

People who get a life. It does not matter where the money comes from, if it is advancing what is being done for the benefit of everyone it must be a good thing. If for that they have to name it after someone, well what the hell, its a small price to pay. Let see if these people who are complaining would say the same thing if it was underfunded and they had no where else to go.

If you have got any problems with this site send them to Support@HKExpats.com Thanks

Bit contradictory isn't it? Moaning about mainlanders not paying bills then moaning about relating money and hospitals? Yeah - I forgot, this is HK!

Not contradictory at all. It's all talk about money. Yeah, you're spot on: This IS Hong Kong!

Yep, as that disgusting neon Christmas tree in Central 2003 said "Live It Love It"

I wait for the day when schools have all the funding they need and the airforce has to have a cake stall to raise money for a new bomber.

Just because government pays for something does not mean money doesn't talk.

LKS apparently doesn't care whether they name it after him or not. Neither do I, only the Council thought it a nice gesture. LKS is a self-made man - rags to riches stories and overseas Chinese who have made it this way are the poor man's heroes. He is well-liked on the streets and many have benefited from his largesse; kudos to him that he has made buckets out of doing everyday things.

The University should follow its own rules about naming and it is better Li Ka Shing than someone else.

Yes, money talks and if he donated such a large sum, why not?

I wouldn't mind renaming my company after LKS after receiving such a nice little donation...lol
