Hey guys and gals: Been hold up at parents new house in Oz for a few weeks but I am a'commin home to HK end of this week. So what is happening? Any events planned? I am in a mood for wild wild times with dancing and some rocking music and good company. Any Aussies planned a Melbourne Cup event?. Maybe with a charity fund for hkexpats?

Melbourne cup event hey? hmmm, I was planning on laying a few bets down on my online TAB account then checking the Kangaroo bar to see if the race is shown live. Any suggestions?
PS: Welcome back... almost.

hey xpataussie - kangaroo bar?????? howsabout we get a sweep going for the expats charity fund? I learnt to run sweeps in high school (seem to remember it was in English classes under the desk with Mr Jones looming over us, lol) and have barely missed a year. Do you non-aussie xpats know how Melbourne Cup sweeps run???? Great fun and a way to be involved.

I'm keen GT. Count me in. Don;t you know about the Kangaroo bar? It's on Lockhart road near the Stag bar... it's downstairs and kind of hard to find. Mind you, I;ve never seen another Aussie there except for the owner

Is the race live on TV? If so, I will try to organise with owners to allow a charity sweep.
You poor souls who don't know the thrill of the sweep here is the go. You have your (madly converting from AUD here) HK500, HK 200 and HK 100 sweeps. You have 26 or so horses in the race - depending on last minute withdrawals. Imagine numbers 1 to 26 (say) on the side and boxes where you put your names and pay your money for entry into each of the sweep amounts. Prizes go: 60% first place, 20% second place, 5% third place and, coz Aussies always go for the underdog, 5% for last place. BUT coz this is a charity event, winners are invited to donate their winnings to the hkexpats charity fund and just have the fun of the chase.
Waddya all think? Kangaroo bar if available? First Tuesday in November. Hats essential.

ws - did you not know that the HK Jockey Club is the prime sponsor of the Melbourne Cup??? Especially since HK imports Aussie jockeys for most of their races. They run the Melbourne Cup as their first race on the day, then leave a few hours for all good race followers to catch up with their drinks etc, then start their own race meeting, starting with Race 2, of course. You need to catch up with local knowledge, methinks ..... and come along with a hat!
