3 months rent (2 deposit, 1 for first month) comission to the estate agent 1/2 month rent,(usually a waste of money at all)
water 130 per 3 months??
gas depends on how long you shower
electricity depends on whether you run the A/c 24/7 or not.

The deposit for the electricity company is around $500 and about the same for the water company I think.... not sure about gas

The cost of having a phone/ internet connection and broadband TV is minimal

Fran, usually your landlord will leave the utilities in their names - you just have to pay the bill. So no deposit necessary.

Rental:

+ two x monthly rent for deposit/bond
+ one x monthly rent in advance payment
+ half x monthly rent for property agent commission
+ stamp duty (contract registration fee, it is small sum, about 0.05% percentage of monthly rental)

In total that is a little over 3.5 months rent (in advance).

Furnishing:
A "furnished" apartments means different things to different landlords, so that depends. Some apartments are bare, with only air conditioning provided, others include lots of furniture table, chairs, glass, cookware, etc.

You might need to buy your own de-humidifier(s) for summer / heater for winter (most apartments do not have any type of heating), or buy secondhand from check out the expats sales section.

Utilities:
As sunwaterandsky says, most often landlord has provided the water, gas & electricity connection
so you only need to pay the bills, in arrears. Electricity charges are second only to Japan, i.e. high. and really dependant on the hours you run aur-conditioning and de-humidifers

Government Rates:
most often included, check before signing contract.

Managements fees and charges:
Some apartments charge management fees, sometimes these included in rent, sometimes not. Again check management fees are included before signing contract.

Telephone/Internet:
Connecting a basic telephone line costs $400 from PCCW, exlcluding phone. Costs about $38 / month for a basic service. After you have a basic phone line installed costs about $ 170/month for a broadband 6M internet connection from PCCW. Other services providers can also use the PCCW phone line and offer lower prices. Customer service (all providers) sucks, so be prepared.
