Mac,
DB Marina is one place. Some people moved to boats when the property market went skyhigh so there must be more space for the money. Costs - depends on price/rental of boat, marina debenture and maintenance (sorry don't have the numbers). Facilities of the Club offer an extension of boat living for the whole family - sports, pool, bar, restaurants, play rooms, etc.
In my mind, I think it could be exciting but then, I don't take too well to sleeping on a bed that is swaying, at least I have never tried and think it would make me seasick. It would have to be a pretty big boat with high ceilings or else I might feel claustrophobic.

hmm, i lived on a boat for 3 years back in Holland, also for most part of my life ive been sailing so im pretty well used to a lill sway.
im not interested in DB as i dont want to be another club member. all i need is a mooring, license and pay my fees.
but as its kind of grey area in Hk i wish to know from someone who lives liuke this. ive already seen a nice boat i might consider if i can convince the wife, the liveabble area is a whopping 1400 square feet and that doesnt include top, front and back deck, so ......a big improvement i'd say of a 700 square foot flat.
im mostly worried about maintenance costs (monthly) for a wooden boat of about lets say 6 years old
my reasons are not to save money, merely to live more comfy and less stressfull :)

It might look a lot cheaper to purchase a second hand boat with the said 1400 sqf area instead ( < 2 mio.) of a flat with similar space (double??). However, I understand after adding insurance, mooring and fees it's not really a saving.
Once a year you have to take your boat to a drydock for some maintenance. Takes about a week, can do it in mainland these days as well. Every boat should have a maintenance record, should show how good a shape she's in.
btw: if you want to get mooring for a house boat, you can bet your pollepel you're in to join a club, like mentioned the DB Marina Club, but not limited to this club of course. Best way to find out: get a cab to gold coast, sai kung, hk south, db marina and find out! The people living there often gather for a beer in the closest pub, you'll always find someone who can give you first hand info;

There are boats moored in the bays away from the DB Marina - but no one that I can see is living on these boats. They are off Nim Shue Wan and you could have a small motor sampan to get you to the pier and onto land. You could also try Peng Chau and around the islands. My guess is joining a club has its benefits - access to basic services like utilities and typhoon shelter. Security in HK is less of an issue.
Log onto forums and ask there people actually living on the Marina.

i heard in aberdeen many poeple live on boats, without any club membership, they just get a mooring from the government!
the main reason why its not allowed in HK to live on a boat is pollution, as most waste goes straight into the harbour, in fact your only really allowed to live on your boat if you have a holding tank for sewage.

Can you get your official residency address if living on a boat? I happen to know some countries (ie Belgium) don't allow that, even not in a marina.

this answers some questions, but residency i dont know, is a good question.
as in a mail from a commercial seller:
The cost of maintenance depends on how much you do yourself. but if you get a shipyard to all for you the cost is around HK$ 30,000 per year. The coat of putting a junk say a 45ft to 55ft in the AMC starts from 8,000 to 20,000hk$.the ABC has only floating mooring and the cost for the above sizes is around HK$1500 to 2,300. you can get a privet mooring with power water phone for around HK$ 3, 000.and to set up broadband thar is easy.We do not offer payment plans on second hand boat over 4 years. We have four wooden live aboards boat for sale starting from HK$2900 to HK$900, .if you would like to see them pleas give me a call on

The other issue to consider is how safe a boat is for a young baby. Once he starts crawling, you have to be super vigilant on a boat.
