My partner and i are moving in Hong Kong in February and we are looking for a one-bedroom apartment in central area ( preferrable) since her office is there. Our tentative budget is Hk$10000-12000, we are just wondering if this price is realistic? Is that necessary for us to get an agent to look for us? Hopefully, if there is anyone have this leasing inforamtion, please kindly send us an e-mail and we could talk from there. Thank you so much.( e-mail address christineberyl@hotmail.com)

http://www.gohome.com.hk will give you some idea of what's available. $10-12K would get you a small place reasonably close to Central. The standard recommendation is to get a serviced apartment for a few weeks and look around once you get here. There are some "direct owner" listings on GoHome, but it is much more common to use an agent (for which the fee is up to half a month's rent).

By the way, I assume that you have some right to HK residency, otherwise you will not be able to obtain a visa allowing you to reside in HK as the same sex partner of someone working here (unless you get an employer to sponsor you for an employment visa in your own right).

thank you so much for your thoughts, Hkxp Regular. my partner's company actually offered us one--month accomodation for our first month's staying. so i suppose this would pretty much fit into your recommendation also get us some time to look for a place for later on.

my other quesions for you if you don't mind are 1). if we couldn't find any decent place in central, and we are also willing to commute, which areas you would recommend in terms of living quality and money conern? 2) let's say we finally settle down in Koolong or new territory, how much it would cost by communting ( generally speaking)? we would very appreciate your wisdom of perals on those.

Sheung Wan is not far from Central and generally cheaper. Many buildings are older but you can still find nice flats. Further West on HK Island you could try Sai Ying Pun or Kennedy Town, which are still not bad for commuting.

I will have a small studio apartment in Western mid-levels available within a couple of weeks. Brand new refurb.

Send me a personal message via the facility on this site if you are interested.

Which HK law requires tenants to provide a 4 month deposit?

My understanding is that a 2 month deposit, or exceptionally 3, is the norm.
