Cord blood banking is taking the blood from the umbilical cord of the new born. It has within it stem cells, so if the baby (or even close relative) gets some type of illness than can be cured with stem cell injections in the future, it can be a type of insurance.

Chubby - China has some of the least stringent ethical codes on using stem cells. I know from Oz that storing cord blood is tres expensive, and it is very much like paying out big insurance bills for your house etc. Unless you have some reason to think that your child is likely to inherit a disease, I really don't think the cost is worth it. However, you could look into the possibility of donating cord blood for research purposes. Try HK University.

One of my kids underwent a stem cell extraction around 2 years ago at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Shatin. The cells are currently frozen. This was part of some ongoing treatment so there was no charge. I'm not sure if they offer this or a similiar service for non-treatment related reasons, but you could ask them.

our little girl is arriving soon, and we've "booked" the Canossa hospital in Central;
http://www.canossahospital.org.hk/eng/eng_index.htm

on one of our last visits I ran into a flyer about this cord blood banking, and I'm still thinking about it;

Try to contact them, it wasn't their service, but the flyer was there. I'll check if I still have it around'

I can see that mostly in Hong Kong the hospitals already have the cord blood kept for future purposes..so if somebody needs it then you can get it from the others donation.I didnt know about that....bec somewhere in the west you have to keep your own for your future use....well then this is good in Hong Kong....maybe I can donate ours to help others and that to encourage others to do it as well....:)

Yes, do that Chubby. Also, if you are able, donate some breast milk. My younger brother died in a car accident and as a family we decided to donate all the parts of his body that could be used. It was something wonderful for us. Two kidneys, two corneas, one heart and lungs and some bone marrow and blood. More than 6 people got some type of go at life than they otherwise would have. I think cord blood would give a lot more people a chance.

China seems without limitations on all sorts of surgery.
Did you see the news item on how many people are having their legs extended?
Broken, then metal rods placed in them, then caliper things until the bones stretch and grow around the rods. Apparently people are flocking to get it done as they believe short people are unluckier in life!!
It looked horrendous.

No, didn't see that one. Cord blood doesn't fall into that category though.

In a way, lots of the plastic surgery that is done in Western countries are the same as this if you describe it in words. Only thing is, I suspect from your description that the 'patients' are kids, since bone growth plates stop being active around the late teens, early twenties.

No, it isn't 'plastic' surgery, it's 'orthpaedic' and it's being done on patients of all ages. Apparently bones can be made to grow again.
I was just making a point I suppose that there's no limitations on what surgery or 'services' are available in china.
The big ad for DNA testing always makes me wonder (in Shenzen), I wonder if you can just take your child there (as a male) and find out if it's 'yours'.
In australia all sorts of forms and permissions and counselling has to be done first I hear.

I have also heard that up to one third of children in western countries are not the product of the father. I find it hard to believe, myself, but who knows? And I would disagree with the definition. If you are re-forming the natural growth of the body into a new shape, then it is plastic surgery. Orthopaedic would be fixing things back to where they were before an accident etc.
