Anyone ever adopted a child while living in HK? I will be on secondement in HK for 2 years beginning this spring and since I had read that adopting a child from China generally takes almost two years, I thought I would start looking into it now. My problem is that for U.S. citizens, international adoption generally requires a home study and I will be selling my apartment in one state and buying another one upon my return in two years. I wanted to time this so that I could take the child back with me when I return home. Anyone have experience with adoption agencies that work with U.S. citizens living abroad?

Gringita, if you will be living in Hong Kong, shouldn't your home study and adoption be done here?

Gringita,
On this site, we generally just ignore Mango's posts like these. I am sure that you will get some better responses soon.

Sorry and welcome to the site.

Gringita .... if you can wait a couple of days there is a US woman in my apartment block who adopted a Chinese girl and another whose friend did from an orphanage here in HK ... in fact this site donated gifts to that orphanage at Christmas. I will track those down as soon as possible, OK? Might take some time though coz we are heading into holiday season, but I will try.

i've had about 5 or 6 friends adopt here in HK... the process is soooooooooooooo much simpler than in the states(2 of hte couples were from the US)...
you can adopt locally if you have lived here for 18 months.... once you have accomplished that it takes another 6-12 months to complete the adoption...you have to go to two seminars about adoption to make sure you are serious... then they do a home study....after that you find out whether or not you have been approved...
all of the people i know were approved and got a baby within 1-4 weeks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mango ... first go and wash your head in heavy detergent in a bath, OK????

Then, go out and visit the Portland Orphanage. And ASK the staff there what happens to kids who DON'T get adopted! And I bet you will be told they have to be thrown out at a certain age ... maybe 14, maybe 16, maybe 18 if they are lucky. Then what?

This is NOT about "buying" kids, it is about "rescuing" kids from a life within an instititution if they are lucky ... but often worse.

The money goes partly toward the horrendous fees the governments on both sides charge for simply stamping documents, and all the other bureaucrats along the way who want their chops. Also, the medical fees and visas etc etc. What is left over goes towards the institutions to help support other kids who are not so lucky.

Please think before you post such cruel things and maybe you and your business can consider sponsoring these worthy charities?

Mango was not being cruel, he was stating his opinion! He said sorry, he said he hopes everyone understands his opinion... you may disagree with it, but to attack him for it is a little hypocritical in my opinion.

Good luck with the process Gingita.

reasonably politely and with goodwill in my heart I suggest you guys butt out with your negative comments
and leave this topic to the sensitive non mysogynistic and curiously enough, female posters.
i am not interested in adoption for myself but very interested in what GT has to say about this and the
situation re orphanages here in HK.recently there was a statement after a forum into adoption in Australia in which the
adoption process and official approachs there was deemed to be obstructive, overlong and unnecessarily difficult ..wonder if it will make a difference?

Adpotion in Australia is virtually a thing of the past, the reason being that the government make it so attractive financially to keep children (regardless of age) that there are almost no children put up for adoption any more. The amount of girls having babies at 14-16 has exploded, and none of them are adopted out.

The welfare mentality has killed any chance of Australia couples adopting an Australian child, thats why they need to adopt from overseas.

Personally I don't know if I'd want to adopt or not if I couldn't have kids of my own, but I have no problem with people adopting if that's what they want to do. But as far as GT's "rescuing children" comment goes, thats rubbish. Yes the kids have a better life, but rescue is not the motivation. That motivation may exist, but only in the rarest of circumstances.
The motivation for having kids, or adopting kids, is purely selfish. Someone decides they WANT kids, so they get them, either naturally, or otherwise. Again, it's perfectly fine with me so I'm not criticising, just speaking the truth.

So Miss P, with all due respect, if someone want so ask a question in a public, annoymous forum like this, they have to ut up with ALL comments, as do you. So if I, or anyone else has anything to say (be it good, bad or indifferent) then they're more than welcome to say it.

Gringita, again, just ignore the unhelpful comments and I am sure you will get the information that you need. I wish you the best of luck!

Westie ... I thought you were a "reformed" character????? AND while you are correct about the Ozzie situation, I never said that the mentality of the adopting parents was to rescue ... I meant that the effect of their desire to raise a family is that those children are effectively rescued - however, we could argue the nitty gritty of this on another thread - I was merely pointing out to Mango, once again, that his comments were inappropriate. The woman asked for help, she did not start a thread discussing the merits or otherwise of adoption. If you or Mango want to do that ... start your own thread in the appropriate forum ... the debating forum.

Jaysus ... I don't know where the pair of you were when good manners were handed out! If I were your mum I would have let you have it, well and truly!!!!!!! Or adopted you out!!!!!

Whatever GT... quote: "This is NOT about "buying" kids, it is about "rescuing" kids"

Sorry if I misunderstood you, but how else can one take it?
Besides, where was I rude? All I did was state that Mango was not being cruel, his comments may have been inappropriate when considering one's need to adopt... touchy subject and one that should be treating with sensitivity.
I actually wished gringita luck with the process, and I truly mean it.
I also assumed that Miss P was referring to me also when she told us to butt out, so I addressed those comments.
As with everything on here and any other forum, things go off topic to a certain extent... not to mention peoples dislike for other "contributers"... no names Sierra Whisky Sierra coming out in their "contributions".

Not dislike of contributors, just encouraging her to see beyond those contributions she doesn't find helpful and to be patient for those that can be helpful. Hopefully there are more people who can help (sorry, don't know enough myself), and that those helpfull comments are not lost or buried in all of the other stuff that is posted.

Honestly Xpat Aussie - don't dislike you, or Mango for that matter. It's just a touchy subject that would benefit from some really well intentioned and helpful posts.

How do you know this? Gringita has made 3 posts ever. You don't know this person, it could be Michael Jackson posting for all you know.

No offense Gringita.

That's true pb - just taking her post at face value and hoping that we can be helpful. If she is Michael Jackson - the home would probably catch that.
