I was living in Hong Kong, and moved to Hangzhou recently. I highly recommend you come visit the city. I am surprised that so few foreigners know about the city. It is no doubt a very charming, safe, green and cultural city. I, in particular, like the human touch the city has - such as its parks are free to enter - where else in China you have free entry to parks? There are many other things I love about the city. Like the people are real nice. The West Lake is breathtakingly beautiful. There is no touting in the lake area. The tea houses (the city has the largest no of tea houses in the whole china) serving nice tea and with nice deco, are wonderful places to spend a relaxing afternoon. The city has pagodas, temples, lake, mountains, modern shopping malls...anything you want to see in a china city.
This page has excellent information about Hangzhou:

You need a visa to go to mainland China if you are in HK.

Hiya,
nope! i am not a travel agent. did i sound like one?
i really think the city is great and wonder why everyone just wants to go to visit Beijing and Shanghai. wld like to introduce the city to more people. well, i do have a bit of self interest here. i am associated with a chinese language in hangzhou. i hope more people will know hangzhou and who knows, one day they may want to take a language learning vacation in the school.
btw, if anyone interested, come visit the school website www.mandacenter.com

oh Gum Tree,
a friend of mine also had food poisoning experience in Hangzhou, in a japanese restaurant. he ate eel fish. in china, you have to be really careful with the food. well, even in hk, food poisoing happens a lot.
