Has anyone here climbed Mount Kinabalu?
On previous trips to Sabah I haven't got around to doing this and I'm wondering - typically - how long it takes and how strenuous it is.
Is training required or would a moderately fit person generally be OK?

Don't go unless you are super fit.

It's no more than a stroll - mind you, I did it as a 22 year old, so I'm not sure how I'd go today. They have ropes on the upper slopes for you to cling on to to stop sliding, but none of the slopes are more than 45 degrees, at max. Mostly it's climbing steps - but there's a hell of a lot of them, so make sure you've done some step-ups first. You're thighs are going to ache for a few days after. You have to get up at 4 am for the ascent to the summit becasue of the mists - if you leave later you won't see anything as the clouds cover the peak. That means you have to sleep in a mountain hut the night before. You'll need to hire a guide and book up beforehand for the accommodation.
It was a very long time ago when I did it, so my info could well be out of date.
You'll need a couple of days from the base town ( Ranau?) and back.

So do you reckon yomping up and down The Thousand Steps over a couple of weekends would be adequate preparation?
I'm a regular gym goer.

If you're in generally good shape, you should be OK. You'll need plenty of puff, but no special training.

Excellent.
I'll make sure to bring plenty of fags then.

I have and I wish I had prepared a bit better. It was very cold up there in that shack with no heat. Perhaps the facilities are better now. After the hike, went to the natural hot springs for a soak - great for the tired muscles.
Take lots of pics.
Bunthorne is right - no sweat for most of the "young" guys in my group.

Still haven't been. Will probably do a long weekend later in the year.
