Nepalis students, businessmen and workers are banned to enter Hong Kong but the immigration department didnt give further details and reason why they did that. This was been a big question becuase since HK promotes this visa-free to promote tourism it was doing well. But the government just said they have the right to implement new rules....what do you think will happen next?

OG you are an utter prick.
The reason is clearly the political situation in Nepal which the HK Government feel may lead to an exodus of refugees. As there is a Nepalese community in Hong Kong it is obviously a place to where some people might look to flee. The are concerned about a similar situation occuring to that in the late 70s with the Vietnamese.
Anyway, as for the crime situation, if Nepalese are involved in a disproportionate number of crimes it must be related to their standing on the socio economic ladder and the difficulty of them making a living in this racist city.
For the record the Nepalese security firm that my company employees are outstanding and scrupulously honest. A good friend in the bar & restaurant business will also hire Nepalis wherever possible due to their good English skills and excellent honesty.

CAG> couldn't agree with you more.
The Nepalese security guards in my building are the friendliest and most helpful people I know. A rarity in HK where rudeness is rife, but of course I shouldn't be generalising.
Unfortunately the Nepalese being discriminated against is not a new thing. For instance the British Army has been treating them like second rate soldiers in respect of payment and benefits, etc., while the Ghurkas have won more Victoria Crosses than any other single group in the British army (I haven't found out yet how the court case of a retired Ghurka soldier against the Ministry of Defence on the inequality in pension rights has been determined). It is not until recently that retired Ghurkas can return to the UK freely (i.e. without needing a work permit). Mind you they fought for the British in the last two centuries, nevertheless they were always denied the right to return to the UK on discharge.

TCAG thanks for that reply - I had see this on the news and was wondering why the decision had been made. Your answer would seem the most likely.
As far as I am concerned, the Nepalese are another contribution to the great melting pot of culture and customs here, and this is what makes the place so interesting, and indeed a "world city". I would be sad if ANY race were discriminated against from coming here, and am a bit concerned that not a large enough outcry / question has been made to the government over this decision, what ever their reasons.

Oh great. Another racial generalisation from a citizen of the country that gave the world Hitler.

tcag - mango's comment was "off", but Austria also gave the world the storyline for "The Sound of Music". The hills are alive etc etc. Oh, and some other stuff. I think Hitler, his wacko followers, a number of other evil people, the balls up at the end of WW1 and the likes of Chamberlain gave the world Hitler.

it's a shame to be called a racist that quickly
Thai passports are going for about 50k in Mongkok, that means you sell it for 50, try to get it back for about 75 (if you ever)
That might be just a minority, but it puts a big burden on the rest of all of us & them. Only way to rule it out: send them back! doesn't sound friendly, but that's the only way one [government] can keep working ...
There are 10 kinds of people. Those who can read binary and those who don't

i'm not supporting what Oxfordgrad posted.... and I have many Nepali friends BUT ... when I workied in Wanchai as a bouncer, almost every time we had trouble inside and outside the bar..it was with Nepalese (70% of the time) I ask my Nepalese buddies about this who worked in the same business (all ex-soldiers) and they said that the younger generation have had very little parental control and are generally not respectful of thier past history and religion.... rememebr that most of the Nepalese comming across now are sons and daughters of ex-Gurkas..... It's a shame that the minority can give the majority a bad name.... I know that local newspapers such as the Apple Daily normally concentrate only on the negative reports on things.... so you could forgive the local population for some of their misguided beliefs...
Defintley not being racist here.... just passing on my experiences...

I've seen the Nepalese lads getting into trouble in Wan Chai. I also know that what they get up to is little different from a Saturday night out in Leeds or Adelaide. Get some perspective.
The community also has some drugs problems. These are symptomatic of broader issues, not the fact that Nepalese "is really a shame for the homosapiens" (sic). Every community has its disaffected youth. Problems are exacerbated by poverty, cultural dislocation and societal barriers to changing your life.
I'm sick of these s*&tty generalisations. It's prejudiced and lazy and the same kind of selective reporting that racists and s*&t strirrers use to set communities against each other.
