hi friends... ...
guys..i wanted a help of 1st hand info abt the breast pump..i've done home-work by reading on internet & books from library abt the advantages of breast pump & i like the idea of using breast pump...
im going to deliver my baby in nxt wk....though i also know that i shud first breast the baby for atleast 6 wks...& later think of pumping the milk from breast if i think it is needed..!!!i've plans of feeding the baby..till there is sufficient flow...from my breasts...
now i want to kno it from anyone of u who've used it...
im not a working woman,im a housewife , where i thought it to be much useful for a working woman..can u guys advice or suggest me that..will it be of good help for me...shud i buy it..??...or rent it out. ???..wud the rented ones be hygienic..???
The ways it wud be helpful according to me...are,, 1... when im going out with the baby then i need not have to search for places to feed abby privately..or w/out the baby, when the baby's at home n someone at home wud feed... 2... when im bathing or not well..& im unable to feed her ... 3... & also in the nights..when i want to sleep due to fatigue or something...
so..i think its going to help me be independent..while i want to..& as well not harass the baby by not feeding the baby with breast milk..at times....
so pls..guide me here guys...what do u guys have to say..??..R there any dis-advantages due do it...any other kinda harm for me or baby..is it painful while pumping milk...??
i've seen this brand "Advent"..& am assuming its good...but a bit expensive..do u guys know any other brands which r a bit less expensive...??? ...
thanks guys..i'll be waiting for some suggestions...
...

if i were you, i would not decide now what you want to do after the baby comes... think about it, and have some preferences, but really, you'll never know what it is like until once the babe arrives...
personally, i loved breastfeeding. i felt so connected to my baby and i was really disappointed when i had to give it up due to medical reasons when my son was only 6 months old.
i did have a pump (two actually) that i bought from watson's... neither were very good. the manual one was hard work and the battery one actually hurt. i would rent a very good quality pump if i were you and breastfeeding doesn't work
also, always pumping and then feeding from a bottle is SOOOOOOOO much more work! you need to sterilise everything until at least 10 months...instead of feeding the baby, you use the time to pump and then the time to feed. so, it doesn't save you time, it actually takes LONGER!
the nice thing about pumping is that hubby can help with the feed. but you are still the one that has to take the time to pump! you still have to wake up through the night to pump, because your breast become engorged and actually painful if you don't, so in the end, you don't really get much more sleep.
for some people, breastfeeding is difficult. i never had any problems, never consulted a lactation consultant... just did what felt right. when i was out with baby, i bought a "bib" for myself from toys 'r' us for about $100... that went around my neck and the baby fit under it to feed... after a while, i thought... screw it... i'm just feeding my baby lunch... it is possible to breastfeed discretely so that people would never even know you were doing it...
when i have my next, i will breastfeed as long as possible up to about 6-8 months if i'm allowed. once they start cutting teeth, it can get quite painful.
good luck!

Hi Ritu. Well done you for thinking so clearly
I have to say that "my" breast pump was my husband, who kindly obliged to fill up bottles and enjoyed doing it . I went back to work after second child before he was fully weaned and as they say ... nothing better for a kid than breast milk.
You can actually express milk without a pump, but it is really tiresome ... that is why mums use a pump. Even that can be tiresome too, so if you can get your partner involved, that will help.
You really should consult the experts ... La Leche http://www.lalecheleague.org/HongKong.html
Haven't met them here in HK, but in Oz they were great - fully supportive, informative of all the details. Good luck! Not that you will need it .... My own experience is that breast feeding is way more convenient than bottle feeding if you want to spend some social time with your bub in tow. But we also travelled a lot with babies .... maybe you won't?

Sooooooo why respond if you have nothing useful to say, Westie? Do you have children? Do you have the faintest idea of what is discussed here? Leave now .... express yourself on another thread, OK? Or, if you are not into just an ego boost, send me a PM instead of hijacking another thread. This one is about breast feeding y'realise?

I do not have children, but I used to volunteer with a prenatal nutrition/early years intervention group. I would recommend contacting the La Leche group in Hong Kong. You will meet other breast feeding mothers and be able to chat with them. You can also have a look at different breast pumps before you make your choice.

I love lactating women. Wish they lactated all the time.

So you mean "cow" as in the english perjorative? Or "cow" as in those wonderful animals that provide me with all the cheese I like to eat?
That reminds me ... gotta learn a new language now I think it is called "English".

Do I have children - Not yet, but am planning on having some soon TY Faintest idea of whats being discussed (as opposed to disgust, re your first effort), of course, she want s abreast pump, I do know what they are. Leave now - NO! Ego boost? wtf? I don't inflate my ego by indicating that your husband pumping your breasts is a disgusting notion... it's just that gross! HiJacking - pot/kettle/black. Check out your efforts lately madam cow.
Notice you didn't jump down old mate Shazzas throat when she cracked a funny... hmmm *singing now... sing with me GT* "Sisteeeeeers are doing it for themselves.... dadadadadada" Or in your case "I am women, hear me moooooooo, everything I speak is pooooooo, and xpat knocks me down, he does it again and agaaaaaaiiin."

I give up. She'll just claim it's another 'typo', or maybe her pal TB will spend the rest of the night trawling through Google trying to dig up 'perjorative'.
Actually, that wouldn't be a bad idea. Might occupy her time.
