I find it interesting that there are different takes on humour.

As an Aussie, the self-deprecating humour is up there as normal. I think we get it from both the Irish and the English. For example, while it is perfectly normal for an Aussie to insult a friend: "you old wrinkly/drunk bastard" or "you're nothing but an old tart" - they would rarely do that to a stranger (unless p**sed or provoked).

In fact, if you ARE insulted by an Aussie, it usually means they are totally comfortable with you and regard you as someone they would defend to the death - eg "you might be a f*cking Yankee bast*rd, but you're OK really". Substitute "Pommie bast*rd" "Dutch bast*rd" "Kraut bast*rd" etc etc etc.

But ... along with that is a reliance on sarcasm and a familiarity with the nuances and intricacies of the English idiom. In the colonies, the idiom is more developed than the home countries.

Somehow, however, despite the common English and Irish heritage, the US citizens seem to be devoid of this "make fun of ourselves" humour. Not casting aspersions at anyone, please don't take offence.

I am just wondering. How many of you, from non Aussie, NZ, English or Irish backgrounds find this type of humour strange and/or offensive.

Have to say, though, I find the Chinese to be similar. They seem to know when to laugh at themselves and not be worried.

I thought so, gdv, just from your posts. Though the Dutch have a reputation as being "serious" and "exact". You saying that is not the case?

Fast? When I was unemployed for a while, I learnt how to touch type. It makes this stuff easier. Except for all the :)) and the numbers. I quit after I learnt the letters.

The clutch in your mouse????? ROTFLM etc. Reminds me of hubby's car when I met him - before marriage. It was a Renault. Orange. Must have changed the clutch plate about 3 times. Every single time, the whole engine had to be hoisted out of the car. My dad, who is a mechanical engineer, said: "if the French could put the engines in the roof, they would do it just to bugger the rest of us up".

But hubby still wants a Peugeot. I learnt to drive in a Peugoet 306. I don't know if you guys had to do a "three-point-turn" for your licence. When you have to do a reverse, front, reverse and off thing in a small street. But the Peugeot 306 could to a 360 degrees turn, no matter how narrow the street. My license instructor just didn't know what to do!!!!

I did get my licence, despite going through a stop sign, lol.

Hubby's dream was to meet a beautiful young woman driving a citroen in France. I think I spoiled it for him, coz when we were hitching from France to Spain, we got picked up by a gorgeous young woman, in a citroen, and taken to the border. I sat in the front with her!!!!!! No way would I trust him to live out his dream... lol.
