Hey all,
I've recently secured a NET teaching position with the EMB and will be moving to HK in August. My partner is a mechanic, and try as we might, internet searches have not helped us find a job for him yet... is there a chance that he could find work once we are there?
Also I just read in the Khaleej Times world news that "Hong Kong is lifting employment restrictions on dependants of foreign professionals in a bid to attract more overseas talents into the territory" as of May 15th.
I guess my partner will be a dependant at first, so hopefully this will lifted restriction will apply to us?
Any ADVICE (spelling corrected, jees) is totally welcome as he is (understandably) beginning to panic, lol :)
goddamn right, it's a beautiful day :)

Yes, I think that new law change will apply to your partner.
Check it out though at immd.gov.hk.

If he's not your husband, he cannot be a dependant. Defacto relationships are not recognised in HK, and being a mechanic, he has no special skill that can't be covered by a local. You need to get some good advice 9and help) from your new employer with regard to your partner. He will have to come on a tourist visa which will allow him to work, but only for 3 months per employer, and for a miximum of 12 months then he must leave the country (for a set period of time... not just a week or two).

Oh, I thought you were married. In that case, no dependent visa.
AFAIK you can't work (legally) on a tourist visa, but many people do.

Nobody gives a rats arse if he's a mechanic or a brain surgeon. Just make sure you both come with your eyes open, better to get married first if you can

And no Chicago, I wouldn't let plebeian attitudes rain on my parade :) The funniest thing about a put down like Mango's is when it's delivered in extremely bad English ;)

I cannot see a post in this thread from Mango. I would like to know where it is.
You say you are coming here as an NET. Is that a teacher? Learn to spell first.
Any advise totally welcome as he is (understandably) beginning to panic, lol :)

I don't have much time left. Took a sleeping pill so I'm fading.
What sort of mechanic is your mate? I will have a think.

I thought I was going mad cos I was scrolling up & down trying to find out what Mango had posted. BTW, Mango's like this with everybody...so it's nothing personal...

A mod must have deleted it. It said "F**k off and tell your f**king partner to stay away from HK", etc, the usual Mango welcome.

Thanks hk_juno for filling in the blanks about Mango's comments! Am not surprised then that the post was deleted. Well, just hope those words haven't scared the poor lass away!
