No-one thought it would happen. Japan holds such sway with its aid to the smaller countries but it seems like they voted with a bigger interest at heart. Not that anyone thinks Japan will stick to the rules, but it is great to see the smaller countries sending the message, not just the easily-dismissed Oz, NZ and some Euro countries.

Unfortunately, as I understand, because the Japanese catch a lot of the whales for 'scientific' study, there is a loophole that allows them to keep doing it.

yes - the Japanese have had that loophole for a few decades. The important thing here, I think, is that there were a whole lot of new and small players in the race, Japan thought they had bought them with aid, and they stood up for their own interests. It is a milestone I think for these smaller nations. Japan will keep doing their own thing, but maybe one day they will start to see it is not just the rich countries that object.

Here are some news quotes:

"To basically say to Japan in very clear terms that blowing up whales, destroying them with explosives and slicing them up and selling them in Japanese whale restaurants, is not science," he said.

Tourism bodies have also welcomed the vote.

Managing director of the Tourism and Transport Forum, Christopher Brown, says the right decision was made.

"This is a win for cameras over harpoons," he said.

"We're delighted that whale watching has triumphed over whale slaughter.

And .....

Greens Senator Bob Brown says he is not optimistic the vote will have an effect.

"I believe the Japanese are going to proceed anyway," he said.

He has urged the Federal Government to heed a Senate motion for Australia to shut its ports to Japanese ships if whaling continues.

Earlier today, Federal Opposition spokesman Anthony Albanese said the real outcome of Australia's efforts will not be known until the vote on scientific whaling.

He said the Federal Government could do more by taking legal action against the main whaling countries.

"We know that they are not killing whales for science - they are killing them for lunch," he said.

And some more good news.

IWC condemns Japan's whaling program

By Sarah Clarke

A resolution condemning Japan's scientific research program has been carried at the International Whaling Commission (IWC) meeting in the South Korean city of Ulsan.

Australia moved the motion, with 30 countries giving their support.

The resolution, which questioned the need for a scientific hunt, was carried with 27 votes in Japan's favour.

Anti-whaling countries believe there is not enough data to allow hunting of any sort and humpbacks should be off limits.

But this resolution is powerless: through a loophole in the convention, Japan's allowed to continue its scientific research.

The IWC members are also expected to consider a Japanese proposal to increase the number of whales it kills in the interests of scientific research.

Makes you wonder what has to be done to close the loophole.

I see the Japanese got the s*&ts and are considering to resign from the IWC.

Makes you wonder whats the point of these types of organisations if, other than follow established regulations, you can just thumb your nose at them and go on your merry way.

"If you don't play our way, we are going home". Doesn't say much for the Japanese government or their maturity if they do spit the dummy. But I suspect they won't.

Gotta love the Aussie politicians (the ones in opposition - not the current leaders).

from news.com.au

AUSTRALIA last night won an historic victory to stop Japan gaining official international approval to increase its inhumane cull of whales for scientific reasons.

But Japan immediately set the stage for a diplomatic showdown by declaring it will ignore the International Whaling Commission decision and may even quit the IWC altogether.
A defiant Japan said it would push ahead with its scientific program to increase the number of whales it kills, including the vulnerable humpback and fin whales so popular in Australia

A Japanese fast food chain says it will sell 200 whale burgers a day to meet strong demand from its customers amid global criticism over the country's bid to expand whaling.

Burger chain Lucky Pierrot, which runs 10 shops on the northern island of Hokkaido, says the burger using minke whales caught under Japan's controversial "research" whaling program is selling like hotcakes.

"We fry minke whale meat and the burger really tastes like beef," manager Miku Oh said.

"We have decided to add a whale burger to our menu due to strong demand from our customers and feel very thankful to the whales for allowing us to make the burgers."

Twenty whale burgers, each priced at 380 yen ($4.50), will be sold from Thursday at each of the chain's 10 outlets.
----

2 things:
1) if it tastes like beef, why not just eat beef?
2) i am sure the whales gave their permission to make the burgers...

Yes - it is like the fabled cow that I mentioned before - from Restaurant at the End of the Universe. "Oooooh I just can't wait to be harpooned. And the thought of writhing in agony in the ocean waiting to die is just delightful. Oh being lugged up onto the deck and quartered is an experience I have always wanted. And the honour of being a burger for the honourable citizens of the land of the rising sun is something I never could have dreamed of. I thank you, my mate thanks you, my kids thank you. Sayonara."
