Not wanting to step on Gum Tree's topic about taxi drivers, I wanted to find out about other service providers, for example, beauticians, manicurists, masseuses, reflexologists and the like. Do you tip and if so, how much?

Normally about 10 to 15%, depending on service...

If service is really good, perhaps more.
Likewise if service is cr*p, nada...!

If the service provided is excellent, or as good / better than what I was promised, yes.

I don't tip if the service charge is already added in - I am guess that is right. And I agree with gdv, you tip for an extra service. Though as a mother of someone who works in a bar and madly saving for a trip, I know she looks forward to the tips as her food money for the week.

I have now revised my policy on taxi drivers, thanks. I round it off to the nearest five if I am happy not to be killed and to the nearest ten if they provide me with Cantonese lessons too. [:x)] [:x)] [:x)]

The 'service charge' here in HK has nothing to do with 'tipping' as in Europe.
A big survey of restaurants in HK was done to ask them where the 10% went and most of them said it was just part of the bill, the wait staff get none of it.
I make everyone in the group give a few dollars as a tip when we pay the bill.
In Shenzen we have a favourite waitress and always put in 10$ each for her, at Christmas we put in 100$ each for her. Needles to say, we get excellent service in that place!

Sorry G de V, but life is hard as a waiter/ess!

So the service charge is like a GST? But it goes to the mgt instead of govt????? What a rip off!!!!!! I thought it went to the staff. Thanks for that info.

It's good to get all your feedback. I really think that it (tipping) does encourage good service although sometimes it can be taken for granted. I hope we never get to the point where, like in the US, they EXPECT it regardless of what level of service they have provided.

barbie, which restaurant in Shenzen is it?

as an aussie, i reckon tipping sucks. however if something special happens, then a tip is worthwhile. but i wish all the americans didn't overtip. they're upsetting the applecart.

OY driver, don't go to the bar my kid works in!!!! She relies on those tips!!!!

Even in Oz I tip. But I am more strict with my criteria. It has to be extra good service. In the US, I believe, the waitressing etc pay is so low that tips just bring them up to the Ozzie minimum wage. But maybe that is in the olden days and things have improved since then.

BBC Velvet.

In Oz I don't usually tip taxi drivers, have never tipped a hairdresser and don't tip in a restaurant unless there's a crowd of us. I tip here because they earn such a minimal amount and work such long hours.

10 years ago, when i first arrived here, i worked in a british pub. my first christmas i had to work. there was one group of 17 people. do you know how much they tipped us on christmas day??? $0!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
we worked our asses off and we got nothing extra!

i was shocked and disappointed! it took us about 30 minutes to clean up after them too! (there were 3 people serving them).

since then, if the service is good i tip. but that said, when i eat in a chinese restaurant, my hubby doesn't let me tip except some change(he insists that it isn't necessary nor expected in a chinese restaurant).

as for tipping people such as a beauty therapist/manicurist etc. i am a beautician, and i can say that i don't "expect" a tip, but they are nice to receive now and then. it let's me know that i havent' lost my touch. but i don't take it to heart when i don't get a tip because, i've found that most folks don't do it anyway.(one time though i got a $460 tip!!!)
