gdv - I am from Oz - the only 'white' I need at Xmas is a chardonnay or sand or the froth of a curling wave on the beach. One day I might brave the cold, but definitely not this year!

I grew up with a sort of "white xmas". Parents were influenced by the British/Irish/Spanish heritage. The full roast and plum pudding etc - sometimes in 40 degree heat, othertimes with, believe it or not, snow on surrounding mountains.

But we established different traditions over time. In our family, we try to get near a beach or river. We start the day with a swim. Then have Xmas breakfast consisting of my sorbets or mango icecream, combined with a fruit salad, croissants, and then a barbecue of bacon, sausages and eggs etc. Then presents.

Late lunch is at 3 pm. Lots of exotic salads, full ham, oysters, prawns, fish as available, whatever other seafood that can be got, roast beef, roast chicken etc etc. Veggie dishes such as eggplant parmigiana. Tofu burgers etc etc.

Followed by trifle, fruit salad, Xmas cake and coffee.

Then cricket on the street or on the oval.

Then collapse in front of the TV and the hungry have sandwiches made with fresh bread and left over meat and salad. And drink the rest of the alcohol....

I just LOVE Xmas......

Hi there Gum Tree.

How about malaysia? There is an island off malaysia peninsula call Penang. it is touristy but i know you can get groceries easily. However, I m really not sure about the cooking part.

If you want a warm xmas, I think malaysia might be a good choice apart from thailand. They have nice beaches depending on which side of the coast you are on.

I'll giver you more details later if you wanan think about malaysia.

Penang sure for hawker food, Eveday... Best food of Malaysia.
But avoid the tourist places on Gurney Drive. Best way is if you know a native.
Some resorts for tourists are ok but book only the room. Great and better food outside.
If in the 'resort mood': Langkawi might be another option. (Island north of Penang).

The thing with being in HK is that you are spoiled for choice for places to go in Asia! Pattaya and Phuket mentioned, and yes I certainly agree that Phuket can do with tourists to build up again, such a beautiful place. Penang again mentioned - only been there once and loved it.

What may be an idea is have a look at whats available at that time, pick a few destinations that you are interested in and then ask us all on here! Sure that you'll get the lowdown on all the places you put on your list!

Don't wait for your ship to come in, swim out and meet the bloody thing!

Jaykay,
Please elaborate about Pataya and Phuket. never been there. Only a few times in Bangkok without getting out of the Airport.
For my 'ilk', the names of both sounds bad.
I explain: Have been living in Euroland for decades, before moving to HK.
Pukhet and Pataya over there are synonimous to sex tourism.
Agree it probably is generalising, but still feel something weird when hearing those names.
Nothing to do with the tsunami. Agreed lotsa towns/resorts do need extra promotion to get more tourists back in. Just don't won't to end up in places I can do without. Same reason I never went to Ibiza in the Med.

Gum Tree, we are planning to spend Christmas in Phuket this year. Our resort is having an owners' New Year's Ball. Never been there at that time of year before, but I trust it will be a good experience, or at least I hope so anyways.

okay... what I have learned about Pataya.

Pros: you will get ALOT of interaction with the locals
your husband will get ALOT of attention
you will have a lot of stories to "share".

Cons: Stinky
A lot of 70 yr olds with 14 yr old looking girls
The beach is very public, (not in the back yard of a hotel) (that I saw).
The sex industry is very alive, and thriving.
A lot of seedy bars
The beach looks not that great.
The water is dirty.
Did I say stinky?

Jomtien beach near Pataya is supposed to be a gay hangout. Didn't make it that far inland so as to give you a report. Do know of a couple who love going there.

I have heard that Krabi is good.

How about Koh Samed? Locals there are friendly, but you will be restricted to an small island and there is only so much you can do on an island.

I'm bored, I'm pi*sy, and, I have no shame.

Pataya has same (bad) rep as Patpong. The airport already makes me feel like taking a shower. The men are really lechers (looks and behaviour), the gals are sweeter (looks - at least they smile).

Thailand has separatist Muslims, Sri Lanka has Tamil Tigers - take your pick.

Don't let the Muslim factor affect your decision to come or not to come to thailand. Now the fact that the slave trade still exists, that is something to think about.
