We are thinking of staying in HK over Xmas this year but want a week in some warmer place - the first week of the school hols. We DON'T want to go to a resort type place - something more low-key, where we can cook for ourselves etc. But within walking distance of a swimmable beach if that is possible. Don't care where we go as long as it is in the region. Anyone tell me how to find out about this??? Any suggestions???? Haven't been to many places outside China and Bali around here.

Talk to your travel agent about what's on offer and what's good value at that time of the year. Some of them are very helpful on suggesting places.

I wait for the day when schools have all the funding they need and the airforce has to have a cake stall to raise money for a new bomber.

Chubby - haven't been to Thailand, so either or somewhere else is good. Barbie, don't have a travel agent, either. Just a work one, that caters for the higher end of the market. So any personal experiences would be wonderful.

Try eyre peninsula in south australia. start in port lincoln and wander around there. don't go out too far; they shot all the "extras" for jaws there.
stay there for australia day and enjoy the tuna festival

dear driver. We normally go back to east coast Oz, but here we are, first time ever, deciding to spend Xmas outside of Oz. Any ideas, please please please ....

Gum Tree I adore Thailand any where near the beach ..Phuket ,Koh Samui.Went to Bali x 5 (from Oz)before I discovered Thailand (from here) ..wouldn't probably bother with Bali overall again although love the spiritual feel there still, thinking of doing same but not sure yet... hmmm ,selfcatering ...do you like Thai food? Seriously good and cheap..ie bbq fish and seafood at least as good as here and way cheaper...do you really wanna COOK? if you do there are villas ...but not sure of details....

Go to Phuket folks. Help rebuild its economy after the tsunamis.

I will, but WHERE do I find info on finding an apartment or something like that. No Ms P - we will probably eat out mostly but I would like a place that if we want we can stay in and experiment with local produce.

If you are not a picky eater, then it costs more to cook in thailand than to eat out. (as weird as that might seem). How long do you plan to stay in thailand and are you planning on doing any shopping?

I'm bored, I'm pi*sy, and, I have no shame.

The eating at home was more just having somewhere to eat cereal and fruit for breakfast if we didn't feel like going out somewhere. Certainly planning shopping on my part. But we are going over Xmas for a week, and I am getting the feeling that even now we have left it too late.
