Stinky People [ New Topic]

Everyone has at some time of their life had the mis-fortune of being near to someone who STINKS.
Stinkers fall into two categories:

• Ohh hell, did I forget the deodorant, I hope I do not stink, ohh please don’t let anyone stand near me

• I believe in being “natural”

So, when you meet a natural person, and can no longer stand the stench, do you say something? and just what do you say and how.

Every morning on the Tung Chung line...
There's always a few unwashed & thoroughly odorous passengers, and they always stand somewhere near me! [xx(]

Worse is when you are responsible for that person in the workplace. I had a new teacher, female, who obviously thought that the combination of garlic and sweat was the new Arpege. And she would persist in leaning close to the kids when helping them. When I gently suggested that this might be counter-productive for learning, she lodged a harassment claim against me!!!!

If you know the person, you can always find an anonymous way ...

Let me clarify, when you know the person with the problem.. how do you address it. I met a really nice lady, who STINKS! and my husband told me not to say a thing. I think his words were 'breathe less frequently'. So, is it wrong to say something? and if not, what can I say?

Gweilo: please clarify

A few chubby girls are like that in my office as well. We thought about doing something but we decided not to...

Here's three options from the top of my head:

a) the nice, gentle approach. Take her aside and say, "I couldn't help noticing that you seem to be having problems with your deodorant. Can I recommend .... " and hand her a new can.

b) the less than subtle approach. At the dinner table suddenly exclaim "Oh my god, what is that smell? I am sooooo sorry, the cleaner must have not cleaned up/left a dead rat/piece of fish (whatever)" Then start sniffing around, as if to find it. Get close to the woman, say "Oh, I am terribly sorry", blush if you can, and resume your seat.

c) possibly more subtle, but probably not. Bring the conversation around to how hard it is to find a good deodorant in Asia. Ask her: "What do you use". If she mentions a brand respond with "Well, that's not very effective either, is it, have you tried ...?". If she says that doesn't use one say "Omigosh, so that's why ......" trail off and then turn the conversation to how horrible dead fish smell on a hot summer's day in the market.

Ahhh Option C!!!
Less likely to get me killed and, ostracized from all of Asia! I will ask what she uses.

I'm not a subtle guy. A nicely wrapped bottle of deodorant/mouthwash/whatever on the person's desk, no nasty note, just the item, usually sends a message. This tactic is more common than we might think.

You say, "Have you heard of cologne?".

It is interesting, but i have found Asians are particular about smells and most pay attention to this type of personal hygiene. rarely do I hear anyone farting on public transport (in the same way we get everything else).

The harrassment thing GT is really sad. Did that happen here or Oz?

Oz of course - I can't see many people here having the feeling they can challenge the boss that easily, lol. No matter - it just convinced the big boss that we would be right not to renew the contact. You can't be a good teacher if you can't take gentle criticism.

I have talked to students about it and they have told me that their parents have said no to deoderant - don't believe in it. Is it a local thing? I have noticed that they have those Rexona commercials on now - maybe hope for the future

Is it true that Chinese don't sweat as much as westerners??? They don't have as much hair, so maybe that is the case?

My chinese friends tell me that white men have a much stronger and foul body odour.
Doesn't seem like that on the MTR!

i have been here in china for over three years and have been travelling around as my job requires... i noticed that many of the people... well... smell. very few takes a shower everyday especially during the cold season. and very few wear some kind of perfume or cologne. its not only men but also women. hygiene is not much observed. anyway, this is the way or culture and i have no right to complain... i dont mean to offend... just sharing my observation.

Mango to sweat is normal and very healthy, it regulates the body temperature!
i for one sweat more thn many others, i suppose as i come from a cold country and am not used to this heat (even after 9 years)

please all also do consider, that some people try everything to avoid to smell, but not everyone can find solution in this. i for example when i use deodorant, my glands in underarms swell up- within 2 days and finally i need to see a doctor!

secondly please understand that we are in a weird place here in HK....where everybody uses cologne/perfume every single day.....now eh think about back home.....did you use every day.....BTW i absolutely hate it, and i mean really hate it, if a woman walks by and covers me with her WAFT of fake flowery stinky smell which is so strong that i cant smell anything natural anymore.

off course hygiene must be observed, and usually sweat only stinks when its old....;) so a regular shower on hot days should mdo the trick better rather then spraying all kind of chemicals on your body!

I'm not under the alkafluence of inkahol that some thinkle peep I am. It's just the drunker I sit here the longer I get."
