Am currently in Oz and would like to bring back some great Aussie meat back into HK. Just wondering what the best way to do this is and if I need a permit of anything to bring it into HK. I just read on the HK customs website that I need to get a letter from the Director of Food and Hygiene before I can bring it in! Anyone had any experience in this area??

Er...actually I thought you can bring meat into Hong Kong; so I never declared it. Hehe! It was preserved meat though. I don't know if fresh meat's treated differently.

I know a number of pilots who bring meat into HK all the time from AUS and they have never said anything about customs. We are not talking about a little supply, they bring large esky coolers full of the stuff.

If you have got any problems with this site send them to Support@HKExpats.com Thanks

I do it quite often. If you are in Brisbane, I know an excellent butcher who can cryovac for you - but not really necessary. Just carry it on as hand luggage. Never had so much as a second glance at the HK side, Aus customs are always curious, but never any problems.

Ditto. I do it all the time: cooked, fresh, whatever, and never
cryovaced. Always ready and happy to declare it but nobody ever asks.
Happy Eating!

As a matter of interest, what meat exactly do you bring back? Only thing I can't find here is Ozzie-style bacon rashers with rind!!!! Or maybe a good silverside roast. Do you freeze it as well as cryovac?

doesnt mean no one does it, i know so many people who do it, i myself get to cook us beef weekly, members just bring it in and ask me to cook it.

but must admit, the hype off us beef , i like aussie beef more now.....they improved so much nowadays!

It's safe going this way - no BSE or other cattle diseases in Oz - and no cattle industry in HK to damage. But don't dare go the other way!!!!

GT, we tend to bring back lamb because it's so damn expensive here - and there is nothing like a lamb roast cooked in the BBQ with some herbs thrown onto the coals.

Thanks everyone for the advice! Are you allowed to bring eskies on the plane as hand luggage?
Chris, actually I am in Brisbane! What butcher do you recommend?

Plenty of snags! May sound weird but I just like the plain sausages that you get from Coles! Not really into the gourmet sausages so much. Prosciutto too! Love the stuff and it is less than half the price here!! Food is so great at home!

Twirly, I go to the butcher in the complex opposite the Aspely Hypermarket (on the McDonalds side). He can cryovac things. Not the cheapest, but the quality is really good.

No need to freeze the meat either - if you put 2 or 3 ice packs in a small esky (I use the flexible cloth ones) - then it should be fine for a direct flight.

By the way, I prefer the Woolworths sausages to the Coles ones, I've got a couple of packets in the freezer right now. Nothing beats cooking sausages and mash when you couldnt really be bothered.

Funnily enough, Twirly, even though I rarely ate snags at home, except those bloody saturday sporting events, lol, I have craved them here. I get some organic beef sausages from south stream and I am the only one in the family who eats them [:x)] [:x)] [:x)]. They are pretty much all meat so they taste delic. Tho' I haven't found a tomato sauce and white bread to go with them, [:(].

Perhaps we should put a "best sausage" topic up - but am afraid of the lewd comments GDV would make...

hey come on 7 comments and i didnt interrupt....now dont start callling me the bully ok......

you all are free to eat what ya want la.......never feel offended by me and my comments.....i just dont have to much respect for aussie cuisine.....if theres something like that.

its more like.....whatever fits in the pot......but thats ok too.....i just wished there were a few who put the stops on overly mixed "fridges" being served...

anyway....keep on going....bring the meat on!

I frequently bring meat in from Oz - brought some in only last night as it happens. I just pack it inside those small foam containers normally used to hold a six pack, with a frozen "brick" or steak on top. My bags were randomly searched by Customs once and they made me open the containers up. Totally lost interest when they saw it was only meat.

Thanks guys! Do you usually carry it through as hand luggage? I bought a cooler bag to put the meat in and will throw in a few icepacks to make sure it lasts the distance, however I can't put a lock on it!
