Anyone had any experience doing treks/hikes in China? Considering our proximity to some potentially beutiful landscapes, I would like to spend a bit of time walking around the joint.
Any reccomendations? Experiences? thoughts?

Anywhere in this region is of interest to me, so any country relatively close by I would like to hear about.

I haven't been there myself, but one place I'd lurve check out before it gets dammed up is Tiger Leaping Gorge. The Naxi ethnic minority live there, so you get a bit of a change from the Han culture that you get elsewhere in China. It used to take several days to get there but improved roads and an airport have opened it up. Get there before it's ruined:

RC, thx for the inspiration!

XA, have you checked with the Saturday Hikers and the Trampers already (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SaturdayHikers/ and www.hktrampers.com)? They sometimes venture beyond HK for trekkings.

I'm not sure what it's like for hiking, but another place that's been tickling my fancy ever since I saw it on "Travelling in Chinese" is Guilin:

Also, from what the missus tells me, two provinces worth focussing your attention on are Yunnan and Sichuan.

I went through Tiger Leaping Gorge 10 years ago and it was great. But since then they've built a road, as Randy Clapp says, so it may be ruined already.

You can also walk up Mt Gongga Shan in Sichuan, that's very good: cool forest all the way up and a glacier at the top. Takes a day to walk up to the summit, where there is a lodge.
