Guys and girls

I am thinking of going to Lantau for the weekend with my wife and kids. Any recommendations eg. accommodation, boozers, restaurants etc.

Whats the best way to get there?

Also if its not worth the trip please let me know.

Aside, Do you mean this weekend? If so, I guess we're more or less cancelling the Lamma stroll...

The accommodation choice is bascially:

- The Silvermine Bay hotel in Mui Wo
- The Novotel in Tung Chung
- Rented houses
- Campsites

Boozers/Food

- China Bear in Mui Wo: OK place to sit, but very average pub grub
- the Turkish restaurant in Mui wo - not been, but gets good reports
- The Stoep - South African / Mediterranean beach bbq restaurant at Cheung Sha
- The Gallery - steak/grill restaurant in Tong Fuk
- various seafood places in Tai O
- various places in Tung Chung (but to me Tung Chung feels more part of Hong Kong than of Lantau)

Transport

- MTR to Tung Chung then taxis/buses/ferry to Tai O/cable car (soon)
- Ferry from Central to Mui Wo then taxis/buses
- Ferry from Tuen Mun to Tung Chung/Sha Lo Wan/Tai O

Discovery Bay is a separate little enclave accessible essentially only by ferry from Central and not really somewhere to go unless visiting someone who lives there.

Lantau has some great scenary and hiking (from easy through to some of the hardest hill climbs in Hong Kong). I like the place very much.

But Lantau is easy to look around on day trips and the ferries/train run reasonably late - any particular reason to stay there overnight?

FOTH I looked at the Lamma thread and it seemed to have died a death. Hence looking for alternatives. I suppose no real reason to stay overnight apart from that it would be a change of scenery. S'pose getting the ferry back makes sense.

I thought that Disco Bay was a nice place - is it really not worth visiting.

Shazza - what are you up to in Lantau then?

Treasure Island on Pui O Beach, Lantau is super-fun!! They have a restaurant (Ooh La La! Bar & Restaurant) with good food for both kids and adults. They also have kayaking, surfing, boogie boarding, etc. (for rent).

They used to offer B&B rooms, but they are not offering that right now.

Shallowest beach in Hong Kong, clean (usually), and fun... with a very internation mix of people.

P.S. It's easy to get there from the Mui Wo Ferry Pier.

You can take a blue taxi and say "Pui O Beach" - and they will take you directly to Treasure Island/Ooh La La!

Or you can jump on any bus, tell the driver "Pui O," drop $3.00 in the payment box (don't pay the full fare!), get off at the large white building titled Bui O Public School that you will see on the left side of the street after about 10 minutes on the bus, and walk down to Treasure Island (three minute walk).

Disco bay is ok, can hang out in the plaza, nice clean (and not too busy) beach
only 3 resto's operating for the moment (Solid Rock, Jaspas & McSorely's) (and a McDonalds). Think DB would be better in a few months time, when hopefully some more restaurants have opened and the construction filth is more or less gone;

however from DB you can have a very nice hike to Mui Wo, either passing the monastery or by departing DB from the golf course, with some brilliant views to enjoy.

I do recommend the Turkish resto in Mui Wo, unfortunately they charge hk prices.

there is a small hotel/guesthouse next to the Stoep in lower Cheung Sha. Also fantastic beach there;
at Mui Wo ferry pier a couple of 'booths' rent out rooms/houses
I've heard lots of good things about Ohlala (http://www.treasureislandhk.com/), but have not made it there yet

I think it's only $500, shazza, but I can check. It's a nice big tent that you can stand up in, according to my understanding. They will set it up and take it down for you, and you don't have to carry it with you...

Gatita,

Apologies for forgetting to put OhLaLa on the original list, especially since we did a most enjoyable corporate day there recently. Excellent beach, very reasonable food (though I don't think it would claim to be haute cuisine).

You maybe have an interest to declare though...
