Kowloon or Hk Island [ New Topic]

Help! Major dilemma, can't decide whether to live on kowloon or Hk island. Have done some research and found that you get more for your money on Kowloon (including a pool) and i will be teaching Yau Tong most of the time so kowloon sounds good. I've actually found a really nice place called horizon suites (anyone heard of it) but its in Ma on Shan. Only drawback is I like to party and not sure how i'd get home in the early hours from a night out in central. Also living on the island is so convenient for shopping and meeting up with friends. Would it be better to live on the island and save on transport. Any adivce would be much appreciated! Thanks
Lauren

You can get used to anything.......I lived on the "dark side" for a year and really enjoyed it. Lots of expats live in the New Territories now.

Getting home is easy - that would be a taxi that would cost you about the same price as two drinks in LKF.

Wouldn't recommend you live in Horizon Suites. It's expensive and they have regular groups of mainland tourists in every week who block up the elevators and take pictures of you when you're at the swimming pool......

Also, a taxi back from Central would cost you approx HK$300 if you miss the last public transport (usually midnight for the last bus/MTR/KCR)

I think there is some type of serviced accom in North Point if you want to base yourself there first. It's close enough to Central and to Yau Tong.

Think you may have been ripped off last time if you got charged that amount. Central to the central Shatin area is around $150, and Ma On Shan isn't that far from Shatin, for the price to be around $300, unless you get stuck in traffic or something but after midnight, not likely unless there's an accident or a typhoon.

In addition, depending on how inebriated you are, there are buses that run overnight services to Ma On Shan too.

It's way more to taxi it to Sai Kung isn't it?

Oh, nevermind. I was just thinking if she is looking around for places to live, that's very far.

Oh sorry Chicago...I thought I had missed something somewhere. But Sai Kung is an option with plenty of expats living in that area too.

I tend to recommend living on the HK island, in the first instance, much easier.

There is a MTR station in Yau Tong so the daily commute from anywhere on the island shouldnt be too bad.

I'd look at apartments in North point and to a lesser extent, Quarry bay, Sai Wan Ho districts. After a couple of years you can think about moving further out into the sticks once you know your way around.

Ma On Shan is a long way from civilisation, and not particularly handy for Yau Tong. A closer but not recommended option would be Lam Tin, but hardy inspiring location.

You should be prepare yourself a bit for Yau Tong it is a pretty grim district in my view, an old industrial section of town.

an online map might help,

then click English

my 2 cents.

We will consume 85 million barrels of oil today, what's going to be left for tomorrow?

For expat, i really would recommend you to live in HK island instead elsewhere in Kowloon which shall be more close to your friends and the night time events are much convenience.
If you think the rent in HK island is expensive, try to take hongkonger's advice to take one a little bit far away from the CBD. North Point and Sai Wan Ho is not a good choice as the condition there is not really good. Try Island Resort (is a new estate in Chaiwan), i saw some expats living there too. I think you only take half hours to Yau Tong by MTR.
let me know if you want more help j_s914@hotmail.com
