Air miles - Whats the point ? [ New Topic]

So once again I buy a ticket from Cathay and try and get an upgrade.

Once again I am told there are none available and the soonest I would be able to get one would be late November.

What is the point of them giving out all of these "Points" if thety are never going to allow people to spend them as they never have enough seats available.

You spend all your time being loyal to a compnay and keep on using their services, but when it comes to payback time your at the bottom of the pile.

Anyway rant over !!!

If you have got any problems with this site send them to Support@HKExpats.com Thanks

Why be loyal to a company that is only interested in milking you of your hard-earned bucks?

If you are meaningfully loyal to them then there is no problem getting upgrades. I have almost never had difficulty spending mils on upgrades whenever I wanted to (many of them on HKG-LHR where people claim it is near impossible). I have spent over 1.3M AsiaMiles so far.

SG - what status in Marco Polo Club do you have? I believe there are almost 4000 Diamond card members in Hong Kong alone, all of whom have to earn 120,000 Club Miles a year to keep that status - that is loyalty, and that is when you get great service back from CX.

If you only fly, say, 10-20,000 miles a year in total then, no, there really isn't any point in being loyal to one airline.

SG> Don't give up yet. I had the same issue once, and managed to upgrade our seats (CX: HKG-BKK v.v.) while checking in at the airport.
If the staff find that the flight is full, they'd rather upgrade you for miles, instead of someone else for free...

in other words, you really pay for the upgrade finally and there is no free lunch for the poor.

Well, if you are lucky then the company pays for the 120,000 miles and you get the upgrades... that's how it used to work for me, but now I'm hooked on the status and these days it's largely my own dollars that keep me up there.

I'm 4 out of 6 for free upgrades Y->J on my last regional flights as well (I only use the miles to guarantee a long haul upgrade).

for upgrade seats , like going back to the UK, you have to book at least 9 months in advance......

Hmmm, that's too bad cos I imagine that most of us who travel to the UK don't really plan that far in advance.

Has anyone managed to get an upgrade on a fare48 economy ticket using their points?

adfundum is right... get your agent to put you on the waiting list for an upgrade and wait... if there are seats available, they will let you upgrade at the airport - perhaps the issue is that now that the good times appear to be back again, far far more corporate travel is happening in business and first, particularly on long haul flights... it is quite common for uk or oz flights to have packed business and first class seats, with heaps of space in economy....

as a diamond card holder on cathay, i find the service always to be exceptional... and certainly much better than similar status on most other airlines... FOTH is right on the number of upgrades too... certainly getting a more than 50% strike rate these days...

I'm only silver with CX and have done pretty well on free upgrades. No complaints from me.

get your travel agent to push this regularly... don't make it easy for them to ignore you...

Rubbish. I can normally get upgrades to the UK a couple of weeks in advance.

The one thing to remember about air-miles is that so many have been issued over the years that it is now impossible for the airlines to redeem them all. They didn't cost you anything so why complain when you can't spend them.

On Cathay using Asia Miles? Or are you a Marco Polo Member ?

It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than open ones mouth and remove all doubt.

I'm a Diamond Member of Marco Polo. So yes, on Cathay using AsiaMiles.
